Harriett Hammond(s) was my husband’s great grandmother. In November 1877 she married Thomas Hunt St George’s Church in Wolverhampton. Her age was given as 18 and her father given as John Hammonds, a miner. Address (of both) was 15 Little Moore Street and the witnesses were William Maurell and Emma Oliver.
In 1861 I have found what I believe to be her and her mother:
Name: Harriet Hammons Age: 1 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1860 Relation: Visitor Gender: Female Where born: Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England Civil parish: Wolverhampton Ecclesiastical parish: St Matthew County/Island: Staffordshire Country: England Registration district: Wolverhampton Sub-registration district: Wolverhampton Eastern ED, institution, or vessel: 32 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 103 Piece: 1996 Folio: 11 Page Number: 17 Household Members: Name Age William Oliver 44 Jane Oliver 37 William Oliver 10 Thomas Oliver 8 Emma Oliver 6 Betsy Oliver 3 Mary Hammons 32 Harriet Hammons 1
I have made this assumption because I believe that Emma Oliver, aged 6, is the witness at her marriage 16 years later. I have not managed to establish any familial connection but guessing there must be
From this I have taken her birth to be Births Dec 1859 (>99%) HAMMOND Harriet Wolverhampton 6b 472
I do not yet have this certificate though I intend to get it.
In 1881, Thomas and Harriett are living with his parents (Piece:2805 Folio:68 Page Number:3) in Wolverhampton
in 1891, still in Wolverhampton, ...mother Mary there as well Name: Mary Hammond Age: 60 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1831 Relation: Grandmother, Grandma (Grandmother) Gender: Female Where born: Bridgnorth, Shropshire, England Civil parish: Wolverhampton Ecclesiastical parish: St Matthew County/Island: Staffordshire Country: England Registration district: Wolverhampton Sub-registration district: Wolverhampton Eastern ED, institution, or vessel: 21 Neighbors: View others on page Piece: 2234 Folio: 60 Page Number: 16 Household Members: Name Age Thomas Hunt 37 Harriett Hunt 31 Benjamin Hunt 13 Elizabeth Hunt 11 Edward Hunt 5 Thomas Hunt 2 Mary Hammond 60
Slight problem with this as in 1861 Mary was born in Bilston.
I have Harriett and Thomas in 1901 and 1911 (by now in Newport Monmouthshire).
1901 for Mary Name: Mary Hammonds Age: 69 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1832 Relation: Boarder Gender: Female Where born: Bilston, Staffordshire, England Civil parish: Wolverhampton Ecclesiastical parish: St Matthew County/Island: Staffordshire Country: England Registration district: Wolverhampton Sub-registration district: Wolverhampton Eastern ED, institution, or vessel: 20 Household schedule number: 41 Piece: 2681 Folio: 45 Page Number: 7 John Barlow 38 Margaret Barlow 36 Mary Hammonds 69
This is two doors from Thomas' brother...and back to being born in Bilston.
Can't find her in 1911
So....sorry for the mini War and Peace....I'd like to try and find Harriett in 1871 and, given her age, bonus would be one or both parents. I have not found John in any census - I am guessing he is of a similar age to Mary.
Total guess for marriage is
groom's name: John Hammonds bride's name: Mary Evans marriage date: 23 May 1858 marriage place: Wolverhampton, Stafford, England indexing project (batch) number: M01818-0 system origin: England-EASy source film number: 1040908
But obviously until I get the birth certificate of Harriett this is pure conjecture :-)
Thanks in advance

Don't know how familiar you are with the area but Bilston is next door pretty much to Wolverhampton and, I'm thinking that a lot quicker for the enumerator to write than Wolverhampton. He probably felt that being so close made it of no consequence.J

A lot of my family and my husband's family are from Wolverhampton area.
But my problem with Mary is that in 1861 and 1901 she is Bilston...but in 1891 she is Bridgnorth, Shropshire, England...having said that it's only about 18 miles away....

Mary thanks - possibility...
If that is them then this must be him in 1861
Name: John Hammon Age: 46 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1815 Relation: Lodger Gender: Male Where born: Cleobury Mortimer, Shropshire, England Civil parish: Wolverhampton Ecclesiastical parish: St Matthew County/Island: Staffordshire Country: England Street Address: Ettingshall Lane Occupation: Miner Registration district: Wolverhampton Sub-registration district: Wolverhampton Eastern ED, institution, or vessel: 37 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 25 Piece: 1996 Folio: 99 Page Number: 5 John Nichols 32 Sarah Nichols 23 Samuel Nichols 10 John Nichols 6 Months John Hammon 46
and 1871
Name: John Hammand Age: 57 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1814 Relation: Boarder Gender: Male Where born: Cleobury, Shropshire, England Civil parish: Willenhall Ecclesiastical parish: St Stephen County/Island: Staffordshire Country: England Registration district: Wolverhampton Sub-registration district: Willenhall ED, institution, or vessel: 9 Household schedule number: 45 Piece: 2943 Folio: 82 Page Number: 10 Household Members: Name Age John Constable 63 Elizebeth Constable 66 Mary Constable 7 John Hammand 57
but then 1881 he is an inmate and he is widowed...so it must be the wrong pair as I have found what is definitely Harriet's mother Mary in 1891 and probably 1901
Name: John Hammond Age: 67 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1814 Relation: Inmate Gender: Male Where born: Cliberymortimer, Shropshire, England Civil parish: Cannock County/Island: Staffordshire Country: England Street Address: "Wolverhampton Rd Cannock Union Work House" Condition as to marriage: Widow Occupation: Coal Miner Registration district: Cannock Sub-registration district: Cannock ED, institution, or vessel: 2
Harriet in 1871 must be the key!!

OK..so I ordered the birth certificate for Harriett and took a flier on the marriage being as above, John and Mary Evans,....well the marriage certificate has arrived today and the birth certificate hasn't. First indications are that the marriage is a wild-goose chase. John is a widower aged 32 and Mary (Evans) is a widow aged 40. So Mary is wrong age because we know from census that she was born around 1831 not 1818.
As an aside both of the fathers' occupations is shown on the certificate as "dead" ha ha
So I am very open to offers as to a marriage for "Mary" to John Hammonds.
Mary needs to be born ca 1831 and that is the only timeline I have.

Funnily enough Mike that's one of two I wrote in my book last night to follow up....My problem with Mary is that I have her in two censuses that I am fairly sure is her..with baby Harriett and with married Harriett.
In 1861 she is shown as being born in Bilston and in 1891 in Bridgenorth. And then in 1901 what I think is her she's Bilston again! Hopefully the birth certificate will be here today and that will point me in the right direction!
"speak" later!!!!!!!

OK so surprise surprise...I have the birth certificate and it's not her!!
So Wolverhampton 6b 472 is the daughter of Thomas and Sarah.
Only other birth I can find is Shifnal Mar 1859 6a 588
So it's back to the drawing board and trying to find Harriett in 1871 which must be the key to this whole mystery! I do not discount the Shropshire connection - the Olivers that they were visiting in 1861 were all born there
Father John was definitely a miner but I have no idea of his age.
If this duplicates somewhere it's because I thought I had written and posted this earlier!

Aw Mike
Births Dec 1859 HAMMONS Harriet - Wolverhampton 6b 423
Looks good......
And as for the marriage - I have NO IDEA of how old John was because I have never found him at a census. Mary on the other hand was born around 1831/2 which fits with that marriage :-)

OK I have now received the second birth certificate ref 6b 423. This could explain why we never find Mary John and Harriett together as Harriett was born in the Union Workhouse in Wolverhampton and no father's name is given. Mary gives her name as Mary Hammond. So assuming this IS the correct Harriett, possibly Mary was not married, or if she was, she was no longer with John. The only mention I ever have of John is on Harriett's wedding certificate and I KNOW that it is the right Harriett!
I'll throw around some ideas later but meanwhile any thoughts from anyone gratefully received
