Very old threads, dated 2003 or 2004 etc, are unlikely to be checked by the original poster after all those years.

So might be a better idea to send the poster a message. If they still have the same email address then they will receive notification.

If the date the member joined is showing as January 2001 or have NIL posts then their account is not being used. GR I believe was started late in 2002.

No point in posting for help on any old lookup thread as the original poster is probably still not offering that help. So better to start your own thread where more members will see it.

This has been mentioned so many times before but I think it is time for a reminder

Happy rellie hunting

UPDATED 7th May 2012

Quite a few of the members will know another way of spotting a possible old thread.

Over the years members will change their board names but because GR will no longer accept spaces between words then some names stand out as they are still showing their proper name with christian and surname showing as two words

If the old threads are being accessed through the discussions on the home page some of these new users will not even see the Find Ancestors page....Just like the old Surnames board :-(

GlitterBaby

GlitterBaby Report 27 Apr 2012 00:46

Yes you are correct

I just feel that members will not get answers from the original poster that they are hoping for when the member is obviously gone from this site

a good thread that hopefully WILL be seen!

Good to see that this has been 'stickied'

But no sign of GR removing the the root cause of the current problem - which is their responsibility entirely

They really don't understand the boards - very odd.

OOOerrr !

Glitter's gorn and been stickied !!!

Important message though and I am glad it has been recognised as such - there have been too many very old threads dragged up to the top recently and these people are going to be disappointed that they are not connecting.

GR really needs to do something about the reason this is happening though!

As Ja....x has said, these are mainly new users going through the discussions on the home page - most of them will not see this message.

This 'new facility' is not working and should be removed.

Problem is that if members do not read board guidelines then they are not going to read this thread or anything else which is might be helpful

We can only try :-)

This couldn't be in a more prominent place on the board and yet NOBODY SEEMS TO NOTICE IT.

There are more old postings being raked up than ever before.

jax Report 6 May 2012 19:12

How are they expected to notice this if they are just clicking on discussions on their home page? which I have said already :-D

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 6 May 2012 22:51

and GR still does not seem to see the problem with "Discussions"!

Hullo
I must say last year I picked up on 2 old posts (one from2009 and another from 2006) and in the days that followed I was mailed that I was "naïve" hoping to get answers from people who had posted so long ago.
Okay that's true but I was obviously very lucky as both opriginal posters replied and the contact s proved helpful. Maybe it is rare but it's certainly worth a go. This was when it was the old Surnames board.

How can we see how many posts an OP(original poster ?) has ,or whether they are a new or old member?
Most of the comments on this thread seem to be by the experts .and refer to all kinds of thingsthat newbies just won't follow . I've been on for a while but only guessed just now what OP stood for .
please try and keep it simple . feel free to accuse me of hypocrisy as I waffle and don't always make sense late at night .
When new people do read through this type of recommendation it could be off-putting to see the system being criticised .

Hi Alisoun

Hover your mouse pointer just either on or underneath the avatar (photo) or blank space just to the left of any posting.

It will show ......................

Member Since:
(eg, 2006)

Posts:
(eg, 15,000)

If you hover your mouse pointer over a poster's name, you can also see the membership number. It will show somewhere on your monitor screen .................. on my screen it shows at the bottom left.

Regarding the date of a thread ....................... it shows at the right of the top line to any post .................

you can see

Alisoun Report 16 May 2013 04:36

Just double check every time you look at a post to make sure that you are not replying to a very old thread.
