I am trying to build my family tree and am finding it hard.
My great-grandparents moved to Wolverhampton from Oswestry (apparently as they both worked on the railway).
I have found their birth records
John H. Butler b.1913 Oswestry
Mother's maiden name Tinsley
Sarah A. Edwards b.1917 Oswestry
Mother's maiden name Williams
They were married in Oswestry in Jan/Feb/Mar 1939
They had one son (still living)
Eric Butler b. May 1939 Wolverhampton
(it would appear she was pregnant when she got married)
I also found another record of John H. Butler being married in 1934 in Oswestry his spouses maiden name was Williams. There has always been a rumour that he was married before and this is where I would like to look in particular, to see if he had any children with his first wife as well as going further back to my great-grandparents parents to look at their occupations.
Any help would be very gratefully received.

well this is that marriage, there are no births in Oswestry or deaths for an Emmie Butler. There are a lot of births with name Butler and mmn of Williams but most of them appear to be in Wales.
The only way you could know if it was your gt grandfather would be to buy the marriage certificate to see if the information matched. It would have been very unusual for a divorce at that time as it was very expensive

If he married Sarah in 1939 when he would have been 26+/-, that gives you a search period from when he would legally have been able to marry. Not sure if that was earlier than 18 so go back extra time. It still narrows the seach for you
Go through FreeBMD for those years and see if there is a possible marriage for him. If he was married before, I guess you have a choice of divorced or widowed so check out for deaths of any potential brides.
Then it's time to think about certificates - either for his potential first marriage or her death cert.
I did think about looking all this up for you but if I show you what to do, it will help you learn.
