Thanks Sylvia,

Sorry for delay, have been away.

Will try freebmd. Didn't realise you could search by forename. Brilliant !

We now believe that it WAS England, not Ireland, and we'll keep looking.

Thanks for your help

Leonie

You can search on freebmd on forename only ................. that's what Janet did

and as she says, there are only 20 something names like that to be found.

YOU might be able to connect the surname of one of those to one in your Dad's history.

It just might be worth a try!

and, after all, freebmd is free :-D

Sylvia - Yes, we have Googled until we were blue in the face - which is why we turned to the "professionals" here :-D

Reggie - No we haven't tried the Irish Census, we only assumed Ireland because the family originated there. However, on speaking with my sister last night, she tells me it was England.

The information came from my father and it was only spoken about, nothing written down. I have no idea how to spell her name even, only that he was so very proud of all her achievements, which is why he spoke about her often. We don't know how old she was, other than Dad spoke about her during the 1940's. She could have been any age at the point.

Janet - thanks for the tip, but can't really look into FreeBMD until we have a surname. We aren't even sure of that ... we don't know whether she was from my father's maternal or paternal side, so surname could be anything.

We will now track back through the family tree to see if anything jumps out at us. Zena could have been her middle name that she went by, it could also have been a contraction for a longer name ... anything.

We'll keep looking.

Thanks for your help.

Regards
Leonie

Depending how interested you are you could always go through freebmd.

Looking at the name from about 1880 until the 1930's only about 20+ fit the bill.If you look at the deaths as opposed to the births it is easy to eliminate the majority with this first name. If the relative was a professor of music which incidently was just another name for a piano teacher she must have lived beyond the age of 18.If she was a teacher before 1911 it would be entered on the census. The only other thing to consider then, is that female piano teachers were known by their maiden name professionally but if they married their name on freebmd would be that of the husband. .......might keep you occupied for a while..lol -jl

Hello all,

Sorry to be so vague but ...

Looking for someone named Zena or Xena - was a relative of my Dad. He was always talking about her. This would have been back in the 1940's - we're assuming in Ireland, may not have been, may have been England.

She was a Professor of Music (Piano). That has to be a clue :-) We don't know her surname. ie which branch of the family she comes from. We don't know how she was related to my Dad, just that she was.

Dad's name was Leo Thomas Thornton McMahon born 1908 Chiswick, England . His Dad was Patrick Leo Mahon born 1879 in Middlesex England. Great Grandfather was Michael Patrick Mahon, born Ireland abt 1832.

Any ideas on where to start looking for her???

Any help greatly appreciated.

Leonie
