George

George Report 30 May 2012 11:06

My name is George Lang McAlear, My father had exactly the same name and was born in Lesmahagow Lanarkshire in 1913.His father was also George Lang, although the spelling of the surname in the 1911 cencus at 38 Coalburn Road, Lesmahagow was McAleer.I know it's the correct family as my grandmother's name was Rebecca as shown in the cencus. It also shows that my grandfather was 29 years old and was born in Glasgow. I found what I believe is his birth record in the Bridgeton area of Glasgow in 1881, with the surname now spelled Mclear, but the writing is almost illegible and I can just about make out that his father's name was William, his mother's name possibly Elizabeth. I know that my father's mother died giving birth to him, the family moved to Glasgow, and lived at Pentland Place in Bridgeton. His father remarried and there were, I think, 13 children in all from both marriages. Some of the names I remember were Nelly, Lizzie, Walter, Mary, and Peter. If you feel you are related to me could you please get in touch and I can start filling in the enormous gaps in my family tree.

Yes, it looks to me like the same family, There were 2 different birth records for 1881 one spelled McLear the other McLlear, or McIlear. Ibelieve George is my grandfather and William my great-grandfather. Great that you replied so quickly. Can i ask how you might be related?

Hi Catherine, thanks for all your help. there was another family with the same surname as ours living in the same area of glasgow, when my father and his siblings were growing up, but weren't related. I think that mught be the family Elizabeth and Walter belonged to. My father;s brothers and sisters were all born in the 20th century.

George who was born in 1881 and married to Rebecca is your Grandfather.
Walter would have been his brother, so your father's Uncle, and your Great Uncle and Elizabeth was George's mother, and so your Great Grandmother.

William married Elizabeth (Proven) and as far as I can see had:-
Margaret
Robert
Charles
Mary
George (who went on to marry Rebecca)
and Walter.

and from baptisms posted by Eringobragh1916 there is also:-
Agnes born 1874
and
William born 1867
