Dawn,
You are quite right to cover all options. We also know about census and certificates there are porkie pies whether deliberate or not :-))
Personally I don't think she was married...
Best Wishes.

Hi, Well it was just an option, with Samuel being born just after this marriage. also having seen cenuses that have things put on them and knowing the info isn't right, I thought she could of said to the enumumerator that she wasn't married which is either never or being widowed she is no longer married. or her brother saying her name and then answering no to the marital question.
I had a case of 2 youngest children beign put as the grandsons of the head when they were actually the sons! also a couple being put as married on the 1861 and they didn't marry until 4yrs later having their marriage cert.which was 4mths before my gggrandfather was born in 1864!
so really just another option to investigate.
regards
Dawn

Hi Dawn,

Glad to help. It does look like Martha never married Samuels father as the
1851 census gives her living with her brother and his family and it states that she is single and Samuel is her son. Will check this other Martha with daughter Martha. Hope all is well downunder :-))

It's now a matter of finding out if Martha was actually married or not! I did see a marriage in 1841 of a martha green to a john mountford with a birth of a martha mountford the following yearand the birth of eliza in 1849, couldn't find a death of a john around the time which would of made her husband-less on the 1861! Many thanks once again from downunder :)

Hi Vera, just had another look at the 1851 you did, and it's looks a possiblity! Martha although put UM could of been a widow as the Samuel and as you said the F 1850 could be eliza! also maybe Martha didn't marry! but just put herself as a Widow in 1861. Strange in 1851 she puts herself as apotter but nothing in 1861 and her son is put as a labourer! would be interesting to see her on the 1871! I have Samuel with his wife Isabella on the 1871. Alos I did read a message on a site, which I couldn't reply to that on Samuel's marriage to Isabella, it put's his father as Samuel potter, yet I haven't find a marriage of a Samuel and Martha!
More intrigue! still it keeps it interesting!!

wow! thanks for the new posts! they must of been put on while I was writing my reply! About the Mountford, I was wondering if it might have a T on the end? it has happened here in NZ The sister on the 1861 Eliza age 11!

Wow! thanks! I have a problem with the Samuel mountford! there were two who went to NZ! Samuel married Isabella Oldaker and they went to NZ in 1875,he says he is a gardener, they had a daughter Lilly who had the name Waimate as well as she was born on the ship and she passed it on to her sonGordon! so I know that is the right one,as on the nz bmd there is a record for Lilly with Samuel and Isabella as parents. The other Samuel married an Emma and came to nz in 1874. he says he is a potter. However on Gordon's marriage his parents which are actually his grandparents samuel is put as a potter!!!!! That's why I would like to find Samuel with both parents on 1851 as his mother Martha is a widow in 1861
Much appreciate help given :)
