fairly new at this. looking to find birth date & place for elizabeth jamieson.
what I believe:
elizabeth married william wylie on december 31, 1842 in carluke, lanarkshire, scotland.
elizabeth and william had a daughter, Jane, who was born on october 31, 1876 at 11:55pm at 104 stewart street, wishaw, lanarkshire, scotland.
jane married john hamilton on june 14, 1905 in cambusnethan, lanarkshire, scotland.
to repeat, this is what I believe but I am a beginner so, to quote the gershwin boys - "it ain't necessarily so".

Don't worry Andrew I've been doing this family tree lark for several years now. I wasn't always so quick and I did find when I started that it is better to walk before you run. You have already learned one of the most important leasons, that is to always check your info fully and never take things on face value. You will need to buy a couple of certificates along the way to validate your findings, that's when it begins to get expensive, but absolutely necessary if you want your tree to be 100% correct.
For example, if you want to find the parents of Elizabeth, then you will need her marriage certificate to find out her father's name and occupation which will help confirm any earlier census records. :-)

If they married in 1842 then this could not be your family as the couple weren't even born in 1842?
From 1881 census, they had their first child in 1873 so do you mean 1872?

For Scottish BMD you need the web site (scotlandspeople.gov.uk)
After a quick search, I have found a marriage between a William Wylie and and Elizabeth Jamieson in 1873, Carluke, Lanarkshire, but, you have to pay to view so I can't look at the results as I don't have any credits.
Scottish records usually give you much more information than English ones so they are well worth investing in. You may very well find that the couples father and mother's names will be on the record which is a great help.

you are right. I have credits on scotland's people and william and elizabeth were married on dec 31, 1872.
I guess the assistant registrar, one thomas steele, has a peculiar way of writing the # 7.
if you're interested william's parents were thomas wylie, ironstone miner, and agnes wylie - ms rogers.
elizabeth, also known as betsy, her parents were andrew jamieson, a potato merchant, and elizabeth jamieson - ms orr.
