Edith was my grandmother and my grandfather was John Scrace/Scrase. John Scrace died around 1945 and Edith died in 1979 after marrying William Radford. I have this much info... Nan was very quiet about her past and none of her 4 children were told hardly anything depsite asking once or twice but they were told to leave alone. She was around 30 years younger than my Grandfather. We only have her word to go by on information, this being her name was Edith May and she was born in 1901. The only Edith May born in that year was in Yately - this cannot be her as she had a sister called Gertrude plus one other (possibly Dottie). My father remembered Gert living in Tontine Lane / Caerau / Mysteg and that she married Charlie Williams / Wheeler with the twins and Stella. Stella definately went to the States and was there in the late 60's-70's. That is everything we know. The confusion comes as we are not sure what to believe. I have tonight found a census in 1901 and 1911 for Edith Brooks then Brook with Gertrude and John being family members in Okehampton. The large family and her Dad being an employer fits my nans story of being well looked after. My grandfather was living with his first wife in 1911 census in Sussex. They must have broken up before 1920 as Edith and John had their first child, my uncle in 1921 in Maidenhead. Why the move and the age gap I do not know. |

Good - so she's Edith May! That should help - we might sort the surname too! |

No Janice, finding nowt yet - too many permutations of John Brook (e/s) especially if he didn't use his middle name. |

I am very tempted by this birth as John's mother is a Harriet |
