Ships crew

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

I have looked on Ancestry ships crew list, but it is a very small list and mainly Royal Navy. I am looking for someone who joined as crew in Liverpool about 1892 and heading for Australia.

I do not have the name of the ship, so I know it will be a long haul.

Is there anything else I can look at?

Post up the persons details so we can take a look - have you tried the passenger arrivals?

Hi Flip,

He joined the ship possibly in 1892 in Liverpool. The ship went on a two year voyage to India and Australia.

On his return to the UK he signed off the ship at the Royal group of docks in London, never to retunr to Liverpool.

I did not look at the passenger list as I thought that would not be of use.

As he may have left the ship for a time in Australia, there may be immigration records - it's worth a try.

Also, try national archives website - they often have crew lists

Just had a thought Fli, So the family story goes, he did not like sea life so he jumped ship in Sydney but was found a brought back to the ship, I understand his journey home was not a nice one.

Would there be any mileage in the Australian police archives?

Not too sure what police archives would contain, not that familiar with Australian records. If you give his name & age I'll take a look on Ancestry see if anything comes up.

Try searching trees, see if anyone else is researching the same family.

Sorry for the dealay Flip,

His name was John Roberts, he may have signed on as John Maudesley. No, I am the only person researching him.

He is in the 1891 census living with his mother and stepfather, John Massie in Bootle, Lancashire

How old was he, I can't seem to find that census?

added - there is a John Roberts, chief cook age 34, docking in various ports in Aus & NZ in 1894

Hi Flip,

He was born in 1873 in Bootle Lancashire. He was only 19 at the time of taking ship to Australia.

The reason for the two possible names is......He was either going AWOL from the army or trying to off put his stepfather.

Also in the 1891 census was his sister Mary Ellen Carney and her young son John who was born in 1895.

Each time I seem to get somewhere with John Roberts/Maudesley, something puts a spanner in the works giveing me another headache.

Kathlyn.....I do very mych appreciate you time with my problem Flip.

John Carney could not have been on the 1891 census if he was born in 1895?

This is the nearest census I can find, are you sure you have the right details?

Related thread about him:

I did say on that thread that he was bought out of the army in October 1893 so it's unlikely he went to Oz before then.
