Please can some-one with knowledge of the absent voters list...please check merchant navy seamen lists for Richard abbott 1882 and his brother George Robert Abbott 1879...they are not on the 1911 census.....thanks

There are some Merchant seaman service records on the FindMyPast website but you may be unlucky for the period you're looking for.

There was a General Election in 1918. All those away from their place of residence (so including all men in the army) were listed on Absent Voters Lists. These usually recorded the man's regiment, number and rank at the time, as well as his home address. It is therefore an invaluable source for surviving 'other ranks', for whom there are very few alternative sources. These Absent Voter Lists continued right up to 1939

Unfortunately though, Absent Voters records don't survive for all areas.

Richard and his family visited England in 1920. They arrived on 1st of June of September aboard the Coronia. They were making for 45 Little Ilford Lane, Salford.

They returned to New York arriving there on 25/9/192 aboard the Mauretania.

George Robert (Richards brother) is already living in Salford in 1920....i hope this is my Richard as i have been looking for him for 8yrs..

Richard &George's parents were Samuel &Elizabeth Abbott living in Darlington.Durham in 1901..

Unfortunately the George and Richard Abbot that I found cannot be the people that you were looking for as both were born in other places. Both had a father called William so again obviously not who you were looking for.

Sorry and all that.

The Salford is indeed in Lancashire which seems a bit of a coincidence but probably just that unless the two sets of Abbott's were related in some way.
