Emma Report 9 Oct 2012 17:10

Hi, i seem to be struggling to find out info about my great great grandfather John Dougan born 1864. He was married to Mary Ward in Glasgow. Think it was the old monklands area. They had a son John and my great grandfather passed away. My g g grandmother then remarried and had 3 more sons. My grandfathers dad was James Dugan and his wife was possibly Mary Divers. However I cannot seem to find out any info on them. I heard it then goes bk to Ireland. I have found a James and Mary Evers in Ireland who have a daughter but cannot find any details on a son. Hope someone can help me out with this. Thanks.

Have you found them on a census?
Maybe you should get the marriage details from Scotlands People..

John and Mary ward married in 1885, Old Monklands. The MC would have their parents' names on.

You say Mary Ward remarried. Do you know who to and when?

1885 DOUGAN JOHN WARD MARY OLD MONKLAND (WESTERN DISTRICT) /LANARK 652/01 0009

If you look at the marriage on Scotlandspeople you should get John's age and the names of his parents (including his mother's maiden surname).

When did John die please? Have you found his death on Scotlandspeople?

Reggie, I think that Emma has his marriage certificate as I had a look at it on SP.

Married 31st December 1884 John, aged 20 a Coal Miner son of James Dougan, Stoker in a Steam Vessel (dec) and Mary Dougan maiden surname Evers. Mary Ward was 19 years of age. One of the witnesses has signed T. Duggan. Neither John nor Mary were able to sign the register and both made their mark.

This is Mary with her parents in 1871

Name: Mary Ward
Age: 5
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1866

At the moment, I don't see an obvious death for John in the Old Monkland area.

We need Emma to come back and tell us when and where John and Mary's son was born.

Thanks guys for all ur info. I have just started bk on my tree after 5 years. I had alot of certificates from scotlands people but lost them due to problems with my email address. I had a marriage certificate for John Dougan and Mary Ward. More than sure I had a death certificate aswell. My aunt helped me bk then and her father was John and Marys son and she told me her mother later had more kids when her husband died. Just had a look at ur info there rootgatherer and see u have more children than me so i will have a better look later. Thanks. I think that John and Marys son was born in Glasgow. Not sure where John was born but found info on a sister being born in cork on family search.org. Thats where I have got to.

What was Mary's marital status when she married Thomas?

What was John's occupation when he married Mary?

EDIT

I see from my earlier post that John was a Coal Miner when he married Mary.

Have you considered that he was NOT deceased when Mary married Thomas? Divorce wasn't really an option for ordinary folk in those days and perhaps they just moved on with other partners and married bigamously.

Yeah it seems he passed In that 3 years as I've came across someone on another site saying he passed at 22 years old. But no death certificate m I've mailed that person hoping they can clear this up. Thanks for ur help and hope ur safe. Emma x
