You can view the original of the 1881 census on Scotlandspeople. I do think the "J" is a mistranscription of "I"


I think the parent name is also a mistranscription in 1881

Personally, I would by some credits for Scotlandspeople and check out the relationship of Richard, Frederic and Margaret to the head of the household.

£7 will get you 30 credits enough to look at that census and the birth registrations of the children. You would even have some left to check on there for Mary's death.
