Looking for Thomas Foley, b1816 in Staffs. He and several generations worked in one of the glassworks in Staffordshire. The census info only goes back so far! He married a Mary Ann, also from Staffs and had at least 8 children, of whom several sons also followed him into the glass industry. Looking for ANY information of this time and earlier.
Many thanks,
Debi Foley

Thanks, I do have the 1841 census details, but no marriage certificate, because Genes only go back to 1837, and he doesn't come up on any Parish records. so I am a bit stuck now!
Thanks,
Debi

1812 is too early date-wise, but the fact that his fathers name was William bears some weight, since that is the name given to the first born son for the next 3 generations!

Melanie Deborah Report 1 Nov 2012 20:22

WOW! I couldn't find them on the 1861 census, just 1841 and 1851. The childrens names I have are: Harriet, 1833. William 1835. John 1837. Mary Ann 1840. Lucy 1843. Thomas 1845. Ann M 1847. Sarah 1849.Louisa 1851. It looks as though it is the right family, thank you.

Ozibird

Ozibird Report 1 Nov 2012 20:24

If it is the above then this is them in 1841, and if Harriet is the eldest child then they were married about 1830.

EDIT - oops, sorry, have duplicated! Will leave info re. Old Swinford.

What about this? According to GENUKI:

'OLDSWINFORD is a parish in the diocese of Worcester. It was historically a large parish in the north of Worcestershire, but also included Amblecote in Staffordshire. It included the township of Stourbridge, now a large town and its own parish. It also included Lye and Wollescote. '

Can't find them in 1871. They're not with the Pargeters or with Harriet who has joined her husband in Durham.

Mary Ann is a widow with the Pargeters in 1891 & 1901.

BeverleyW

BeverleyW Report 1 Nov 2012 21:15

The only marriage of a Thomas Foley to a Mary Ann is the one I (and Brummiejan) posted between T.F. and Mary Ann Scriven in 1831.
It's very unlikely that Thomas was only 15 when he married - remember that ages were rounded down in 1841.

Ozibird

Ozibird Report 1 Nov 2012 22:08

However it looks like he was born more 1812-1814.

1841 census - c1816 (rounded down to the nearest 5 years) He was more 28 than 25.
1851 - c1813
1861 - c1814
1871 -
1881 - c1813

Bottle House Lane comes immediately after Chapel Hill, and according to the enumerator's description "... including Siddons Houses back of Brierley Chapel and Chapel Hill. So in Brierley Hill area??

For those who don't know - Thomas's wife, Mary Ann, was born in Brierley Hill; 1841 census address, Brockmoor, is one mile away; Brettell Lane, Thomas's birthplace is 1½ miles; Old Swinford & Stourbridge are both about 3 miles.

Didn't know about the rounding down of age in the early census records, so that is helpful. Many thanks to all who have responded, I now have the baptism, marriage and death of Thomas! So I can order the certificates and maybe get further back. Will also check out the other sites mentioned. thank you all! :-D

from http://blackcountryhistory.org

Royal Brierley Crystal, Brierley Hill
The company of Steven & Williams came into being when William Steven and Samuel Cox Williams leased the Moor Lane Glassworks from their father-in-law, Joseph Silver in 1846. They produced high quality cut crystal and coloured glass. William Steven died in 1869. They started to build a new works a few yard away, in January 1870, due to mine subsidence. The old Moor Lane cone closed and was sold as a pottery in August/September 1870, and production moved to the new site. In 1919 the firm were given the Royal Warrant and the company became Royal Brierley Crystal.
