Hi there, an usual request.
Several of my ancestors were sentanced for crimes in Middlesbrough in the late 1880s.
A named that keeps occuring in the newspaper articles is J.C. Coleman, the stipendiary.
I don't know anything other about him, but wonder if he can be found in the census. He appears at a court case in 1887, so maybe a check of the 1881 and 1891 census would be fruitful?
Sorry, I know there is little to go but maybe we can find something?!
Thanks,
Peter

Thank you Patchem. Does he appear in later census returns? I'm curious to hear more about him.
Is he married? Have a family?

I find it interesting that those in authority who dictate as to the conduct of others, are often from wealthy and comfortable backgrounds.
