David Report 25 Dec 2012 16:53

My Father's side of my tree were Irish,Belfast County Antrim

On looking for my GGF Francis Irvine in the 1911 cencus I find him listed as being at 33 Osborne Street with his wife Rosanna,he being aged 72 and she being aged 67.

When I look for them on the 1901 cencus I find Francis and Rosanna living in a different house with their daughter Rosanna.
Francis being aged 65
Rosanna being aged 55
Daughter Rosanna aged 20

The ages are wrong one one or both.

How do you find the correct version?

Irish civil registration started 1864 so their births would be too early to check that way, not seeing an obvious baptism for them as yet.

Does this fit in with when you think Rosanna may have died:

Ireland, Civil Registration Deaths Index, 1864-1958
Name: Rosanna Irvine
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1845
Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1918
Death Age: 73
Registration district: Antrim
Death Country: Ireland
Volume: 1
Page: 10
FHL Film Number: 0101607

If so, then the 1901 age is closest to her actual age.

The 1901 has them all born Ballyclare - it also states that Frances couldn't read so he may just have guessed roughly how old he was for the census return. Not as daft as it sounds - there does seem to be a correlation between literacy and accuracy of ages on census records.

At least we can pinpoint their daughter's birth!

Ireland, Births and Baptisms, 1620-1911
Name: Rosanna Irvin
Gender: Female
Birth Date: 2 Feb 1881
Birth Place: Ballynure, Antrim, Ireland
Father's Name: Francis Irvin
Mother's Name: Rosanna Galloway Irvin
FHL Film Number: 257857

You could always send off for their marriage certificate to see what their ages were when they married, plus the other useful stuff that would be on the cert:

Ireland, Civil Registration Marriages Index, 1845-1958
Name: Rosanna Galloway
Date of Registration: 1864
Registration district: Antrim
Volume: 11
Page: 11
FHL Film Number: 101249

Francis Irvine is on the same page.

The daughters brother,Samuel,was my GF
I have him listed as b1874 (?)-d1940

I have Rosanna my GGM d1918,the same year as the birth of my Father.

Some thing I have noticed,my late Father's hand writing was eaxactly like his Fathers which in turn was remarkably like GGM Rosanna'a hand writing.

My GF's last address was Arosa Parade Belfast, but dasly he died in Purdysburn Hospital aged 66.
Ive wrote to that hospital asking for details but have heard no reply.
