Anne, the thing that pulls it altogether is George's army service records. That gives his wife as Annie of 144 Clarendon Street and we can see Annie there in 1891 with daughter Georgina. We've also followed that trail.

His service records also give details of marriage to Catherine Kerr and we've followed that trail, too. Maybe she genuinely thought he had died? She later lived with a James Heggie and bore him 3 children (I've done a bit more poking)

The soldier George Chamberlain was a housepainter and glazer before he enlisted in 1874 and resumed that trade after he'd been discharged in 1890.
His records also show that he was posted Edinburgh 22/04/1876 to 04/08/1879.

GlasgowLass Report 27 Dec 2012 20:00

This is confusing but right from the start, I thought there were 2 different men called George Chamberlain.

One married Catherine Kerr in 1876 and was a soldier.
He was the son of George ( a housepainter) and she was the daughter of George ( a baker)
Catherine died in Edinburgh 1910 ( same parents as 1876 marriage) but if she was already a widow, her husband could not be on a 1911 census..... unless she thought she was a widow ??

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 27 Dec 2012 19:36

That's right Catherine.

I said his father was a housepainter on the 1876 marriage.

Catherine

Catherine Report 27 Dec 2012 19:32

According to the 1910 death for Catherine Chamberlain, her father George Kerr was a Baker, not a House Painter ??

Catherine

MarieCeleste Report 27 Dec 2012 19:23

BM - if you look at the marriage details from 1876 that I posted for him you'll see his father was also a housepainter.

BradM

BradM Report 27 Dec 2012 19:19

Ok thank you.

I know house painter's were not that wealthy but his family was.

Anyway thank you for all your help.

:-)

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 27 Dec 2012 19:08

BM - Housepainters weren't that wealthy! I've already checked the divorce records on the National Archives and there's nothing coming up.

I've just posted the death of his wife Catherine in 1910. He wasn't ever free to marry Annie.

BradM

BradM Report 27 Dec 2012 19:02

Thank you.

Marie, George's family was quite wealthy I believe, so maybe a divorce isn't out of the question.

Thank you once again. :-)

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 27 Dec 2012 18:27

This family has been niggling at me because there are so many loose ends! Have been doing a load of Scottish research myself so had some spare credits.

Found this death:

7 August 1910 Catherine Chamberlain, widow (!!) of George Chamberlain (soldier) died of carcinoma uteri in Craigleath Poorhouse, Edinburgh. She was the daughter of George Kerr (baker) and Margaret Hunter, both deceased.

The informant was her daughter, J Rutherford of 4 Jamaica Street.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 27 Dec 2012 18:03

It's not unlikely Catherine!

I think BM needs to get a few certs.

Catherine

Catherine Report 27 Dec 2012 17:56

I think that there is a good chance that it is her in 1891 and she is just living with George Carlson, after all it wouldn't be the first time.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 27 Dec 2012 17:51

I think that 1891 is Annie's children. They're shown as boarders and Anne Carlson is his wife, not sure that it's her.

EDIT: Unless she said they weren't hers and she was minding them!

Not seeing that George Carlson on any other census

Catherine
