I'm inclined to think one should be looking at Port Hope or Toronto, not Port Elgin.

There is a 97/82/"70" y closure on BMDs in Ontario. Strictly speaking, deaths are not closed, but there's no index published for 70y.
So, tomorrow 1915 births should be released, but I think they've not yet indexed 1914.

"Ontario Births, 1869-1912," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FMH8-428 : accessed 02 Jan 2013), Gertrude Mary Elizabeth Rose Eldridge, 1910.

Port Elgin is on L Huron, so they've moved by 1911.
The nominal census date was 1/6/1911, but they were enumerated on 13-14/6/1911.

CWGC says:
ELDRIDGE, GEORGE
Rank:Private
Service No:412576
Date of Death:05/05/1917
Age:38
Regiment/Service:Canadian Infantry 24th Bn.
Panel Reference
Memorial VIMY MEMORIAL
Additional Information:Husband of Clara Eldridge, of 124, Millicent St., Toronto, Ontario.
[so he's moved again]

There's a "view certificate" link in top right corner of hit which links to a pdf doc showing the Vimy Memorial.

Since he's commemorated on the Vimy memorial, note that it bears the names of 11,000 Canadian servicemen who died in France - many of them in the fight for Vimy Ridge - who have no known grave.

One can find his attestation papers via:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/cef/001042-100.01-e.php
[He enlisted 15/2/15 - Clara was still in Pt Hope - he's a gardener.]

If one takes the search help link, it tells how you can purchase a copy of his service record, and also how to access the unit War Diaries of the 24th bn (part of the 5th brigade of the 2nd division).

On 5/5/17, 3 ORs(=other ranks) were killed & 28 wounded by shelling.

A look up on:

gets a digital collection (a pic) for George.

I have looked on the Canadian phone book for Eldridge in Port Elgin. There is only one and maybe they are related. Perhaps a letter or phone call would help. If you send me a private reply I'll give you the address and phone no.

That's the problem Gordon. Canadian privacy laws are much stricter than ours so there are no recent vital records available on-line. Births only go up to about 1912 and marriages to the mid 1920s.
