Tracing a soldier who joined the army in 1919.

Can anyone out there help me please? I believe my great uncle Henry (Harry) Coulson joined the army in 1919. I believe he was posted to India and contracted a disease. He was sent to a hospital in London and died. His mother died in 1921 and she visited him in hospital before she died. I have no knowledge of the date of his death or where he was buried. I think he may have joined the 15th (The King's) Hussars. I have two photos of him.
Has anyone any advise as to where to start looking. All military records that I have searched so far only show details of soldiers who served between 1914 and 1918.

Gillian

It could well be if he still serving in the military after 1920 his records will still be held by the MOD, in this case there will be nothing in the public domain.

However these records can be obtained by the NOK but they have to be applied for, they will cost £30-00 and can take 9 months to receive them.

Have a read through the info on this link.

Questions & answers re service records.

Service Records

Please read the information held on the Service Records page before writing to the relevant record office.
Q. I am a former member of the Armed Forces. Can I obtain information from my service record?

A. Yes, please write to the relevant record office listed on the service records page. You will need to provide some form of ID. This can be a copy of a recent bill, driving license or passport.

Q. I am the widow/widower or legal next of kin of an ex-serviceman. Can I obtain information held on my spouses/parents/relatives service record?

A. Yes, however you will need to provide proof of death and kinship. Please write to the relevant record office listed on the service records page.

Q. I am not the widow/widower or legal next of kin of an ex-service person. Can I obtain information about the ex-service person held on service records?

A. Only if you can obtain a letter of consent from either the person the record belongs to or, if that person is deceased from the widow/widower or legal next of kin. Once you have obtained the letter of consent, please write to the relevant record office listed on the service records page.

Q. What other information is required by the record offices to access a service record?

A. This varies slightly depending on whether the person was in the Royal Navy, Army or Royal Air Force. Please refer to the information held on the service records page.

Q. Can I request a complete copy of my service record?

A. Yes, please write to the relevant record office listed on the service records page.

Q. Will I have to pay?

A. Only if your request is for genealogical/family tree reasons.

Q. Why are requests for information held on service records made?

A. The reasons for requests are varied. When you write to the records offices, inform them of the reason why you are making the request. This will assist them in supplying the correct information. Some of the more common reasons for requests are:
• Proof of service for joining military associations or ex-services organisations.
• Proof of service to enable welfare assistance from ex-service organisations.
• Proof of occupancy of Married Quarters for local councils.
• Researching family trees or history.
• Information held on service medical records.

Q. I need information about a veteran who was in the services in the early 1920's or before. Where do I find it?

A. Service records that reach a certain age, are archived at the Public Records Office (PRO). Generally service records dating from the early 1920's, or before, are held at the PRO however the date varies according to which service the person was in. Please read the information held on the Service Records page.

Marie-Celeste

thank you for your reply. I have my gret uncles birth certificate - he was born in Leeds in July 1901. He wasn't married. I have no information about him after he was a patient in london hospital. Family stories say that he died in themhospital. I do not have the year of his admiitance into hospital nor the date of his death but I have tried to find a death in the records although it is difficult with such little information.

George – thank you for your reply.
I have been on the site you mentioned and will apply for details of my great uncles records. However, I have 3 aunts who are next of kin and unfortunately they are all very old and infirm and would not be able to write permission for me. Under those circumstances do you think I would be able to write as next of kin if I explained the situation?

Kind regards

Gillian

How reliable are the family stories do you think?
Have you got his actual birth date, on the off-chance he lived a longer life and obliged us by dying 1969-2006!! Worth eliminating the possibility, unless your info is pretty solid obviously.

Thanks Jan

thanks for looking but it's not him. He was born 09.07.1901 in the district of Bramley in Leeds. Co-incidentally he was known as Harry but was Henry on the birth certifcate. When I've tried to find him I've used both names ie Henry and Harry just in case. I have looked at deaths up to 1979 just in case he did die later but it's difficult to know where he may have lived if he did survive. I have looked in London and Leeds but not found anyhting.

Thanks anyway

Gillian, is this by any chance his baptism? Sadly it's one without an actual birth date:

West Yorkshire, England, Births and Baptisms, 1813-1910
Name: Harry Coulson
Parish: Upper Armley, Christ Church
Baptism Date: 8 Sep 1901
Father's Name: Fred Coulson - leather dresser.
Mother's Name: Emily Coulson

Address: 34 Chancellor Street, Meanwood.

Baptised the same day was a sibling Emma.

Gillan, obviously I have no idea if it that death is him, but I was looking for a death in the London area around the right time.
The birth year isn't an indication one way or the other as if he died in hospital it's more than possible the age was a bit out. In fact, it is exactly right, he would actually have been 23 when this was registered as he wasn't born until the June quarter.
