I can't see either of them on passenger lists, either going to USA or returning to England.

Obviously obtaining a copy of a certificate is probably the only sure way to positively identify Sylvia's maiden name.

However my guess is that she was Sylvia Hobbs who was born in Stockton in late 1867:
