Could anyone help. In 1901 census for Aberdeen Kennethmont a william and Ann reid living with their grandmother Jane Shand or Mcrobbie. they were very young in this cencus. Jane had about 4 children out of wedlock then she married a William Mcrobbie and had mary ann1883 Insch aberdeen, Margaret born 1887, Helen Innes born1890 and ann born 1896 in Premnay, she married a William Strachen dont know who other girls married and we wonder if one of the elder daughters had these children out of wedlock. only possble one of janes shands daughter Jane ewing out of wedlock but she was born 1867 in Kennethmont, she had a daughter Williamina Ewing born 1888 in Insch. So many solo mums in this family. Family story is William Reid moved to England somewhere and was a chemist. he was informant when his grandma jane. died in Insch in 1931 William Cumming Reid. It has taken me years to put my dads family together and the marriages of the three Mcrobbie girls and who was the mother of William and Ann Reid.still a mystery.

Mother of William Cumming Reid born Kinnethmont March 10th 1898 is given on birth cert as Louisa Catherine Reid (Domestic Servant)

? Ann Reid on 1901 census I can only see Ann McRobbie

Paternity of William was found in court June 1898 but I don't know who father was as there is no link to follow

Louisa Catherine Reid was the daughter of Charles and Catherine Louisa Reid ms Cumming....according to her marriage certificate....she married 1903 to James McLean.

My guess would be that James Shand was William Reid's father.....it is only a guess I have nothing to support it

It may be worth considering that some of the Grandchildren could be illegitmate children of one of the Shand boys but known by the mother's surname.

I have, in my tree OHs Great grandmother who had 7 children 3 of whom were known by the father's surname but the other four used her surname. Of those she had paternity proved for the first two through the courts but the other two she registered them with their father's name as a middle name. By strange co-incidence these births took place in Aberdeenshire in the 1880s and the father was one James Shand. Three of the four children that she had with James Shand were male and named William, James and John. She does not appear on any census living with James Shand.

according to this William was a motor engineer...... might suggest family story re England and becoming a chemist is not correct.

Thank very much for help and so quick to everybody, Its been hard tracing this Shand family so many children Margaret Shand had 4 out of wedlock, Annie Glennie, John Cruickshank, Margaret Wilson managed to trace Dads on Them but Mary Shand known as Mary Mackie cant find dad on her she had two out of wedlock Margaret Shand dont know dad on herm annie Weir Shand dadhe was William weir she went on to have two boys Douglas and Cecil dont know if they went under Weir, Shand or Home as later Mary Mackie married William Home. Margaret Shands sister jane she had more than mentioned children than above. out of wed lock alsoGeorge Smart, james stirling,william Wilson have the dads to them. The three Mcrobbie girls i know Annie glennie Mcrobbie marriued William Strachen know they had Annie, could anyone tell me of the Families of Mary Ann who looks like she married james Mckinnion and Helen Innis who married Clement Ramsey 1933 in St Clement s dundee . i know two daughters of mary mackie shand daughter of Margaret Shand her two children out of wed lock Margaret married James Forbes he died 1st world War and she went New York in 1924 got a copy of the ship and died somewhere in the States maybe California, other daughter Annie Shand died tragically in 1911 yep its a mixture of a family and i know one of those Shand boys had so many children thast could be james shand you mentioned rootgather. thanks for all your help also that puts william to as a chemist there was always mention of a Mrs bunkle ? a lawyer living in Banff belonging to Jane shand Mcrobbies family. Margaret shand buried with parents in Clatt and Jane Mcrobbie nee Shand i know in Insch cemetery . thanks again Susanne
