Find Ancestors

Can anyone help with finding a person by the name of Jane Childs, born Lambeth 1849. On the1871 census she is down as a visitor to the Eddy household in Clovelly, she went off with my Great Grandfather (George Shepherd)who was married to Elizabeth Eddy. I have a birth certificate stating Jane childs and George Shepherd (Sheppard) being the birth parents of George Shephard Jnr DOB 31/08/1873, born in New York. I know that George Shepherd Snr returned to England with George Shepherd Jnr by 1881 as they are on that census living with Elizabeth Shepherd (Eddy) in Deptford, and George jnr is down as being born in New York. However I can find no trace of any of them on shipping lists, and no trace of Jane Childs (Sheppard) at all. Would be grateful of any help.

I wonder why she was in Clovelly? Had a rummage for other Childs in the area and found these two, absolutely no idea if connected!

Many thanks for all the info you supplied, some I did have, no idea why she was visiting Clovelly, George & Elizabeth Shepherd ran a pub in Bideford so she may have been working there. Have tried to find a death certificate for Jane either here or in New York but with no luck. I did wonder whether to research newspapers for Clovelly re George and Jane running off together?

Hi Marie, the George Shepherd you have above is my Great Grandfather, born in Parkham, Clovelly, only other detail I have about him is that he and Elizabeth married 27/06/1863, they ran a pub in Bideford which is on the 1871 census.
