Syd was my Mums brother, I think he was on a trawler at Fleetwood, Mum said he died at sea but as it obviously upset her i didn't ask any more questions at the time, and of course now is too late :(

Has anyone any ideas of how i can begin my search please.

Thanks for reading x

When was the death supposed to have occurred?

Was Sydney his only forename?

Mary

Mary Report 9 Feb 2013 23:01

Sorry, it does look vague ! i know nothing of Syd after the 1911 census, i can't find his death because i don't know where or when he died, wondered if anyone knew where i could find out ?

ErikaH Report 9 Feb 2013 23:04

Was his death supposed to have been when he was fishing?

There may be records in Fleetwood, if that was definitely his home port.

Was he married?

Didn't your mother even say whether the death was before or after WW2?

Mary

Mary Report 9 Feb 2013 23:04

I googled fleetwood trawlers and have joined a small site, but can't ask till i've been accepted, and a lot of the answers are about specific ships

Do you know his exact birth date? If he died England/Wales between 1970 ans 2006 this can be used to search for record of a death. But I suspect you believe this happened earlier?
Have you tried looking for matches with other members on here?

this the only Syd smith born Preston in 1905. You could checkif it is the right one by looking for your mother on the same site to see if the mmn co-incides. Though tjhere is a possibilty as this one had mmn Smith she got married before your mother was born

Thanks Flip, i do have that info, since 2011, i have contact with Fred Smiths Granddaughter, who has only a Greataunt on her Grandmas side left , ( :(( ) and knows very little of the family history, and knows nothing about Syd either .

Thanks Chris . have sorted the mistake with wignall , which was one of those strange coincidences, as my parents close friends when i was small were Mr and Mrs Wignall,

Once again, i'm Very grateful for all your help.

Unless you come up with something on the Fleetwood trawlers site, it could be worth checking LANCAT (Lancashire archives catalogue) see if there is any mention of an inquest - their database is down at the moment, but they'll no doubt sort it tomorrow. Also, you could try searching 20th century newspapers for reports of his death.

Thanks Flip, have joined Library to check newspapers, will try LACAT too, x
