Not heard of after this date my Gt.Gt. G/father in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
Left his family in pauperhood ( Elizabeth Laird & 3 dtrs) in Aberdour, 1851 Census Can't find his death or his birth. therefore the line is blocked. He married Elizabeth in 1837, in New Deer; was a miller in New Pitsligo in 1841 Census. Where else might I look. Have tried OPR's MI's and census results online.

As civil registration did not begin until 1855 unfortunately only parish or church records are likely to have the answer you seek.

Can you show us both censuses please? There is another couple which seems to fit somewhat so would help to clarify. When was John born?

PM received - have advised Irene to reply on here:

'John Finnie born after the marriage of of his parents George Finnie and Elisabeth Laird in New Deer,(1837) is not with them on the 1841 Census. He can be found with his grandparents John and Barbara Laird. Who are crofters in Ardlawhill croft. For some reason he is never found with them.
He married a Mary Fraser and went to live in Fraserburgh and died in Aberdeen. He was a gasworker at his death.'

Query:

If George Finnie married Elizabeth Laird in 1837 why is it that on the 1851 census is she shown as Elizabeth Laird rather than Elizabeth Finnie?

I also note that the 3 older children (Elizabeth's daughters) aged 10, 8 & 5 present in the 1851 census have the surname Finnie. The youngest female present, Janet aged 4 (Elizabeth;s niece) has the surname Laird.

One tought that I have had is that because Elizabeth is indicated as a pauper presumably she was in receipt of some financial benefit from the local Poor Law authority in the Aberdour area. Have you checked for any records as they might include Elizabeth's application for assistance which in turn might contain details of George Finnie.

It isn't unusual in Scotland for a woman to be recorded in her maiden name after marriage

No sign of George after the 1841 census. What is your interest?

Irene

Please reply on here.

I dont have any interest personally, I was seeing if I could help you

As Jonesey has already said, if he died in 1849, you will not find a death record for him

I have no idea why Elizabeth reverted to the Laird name. Divorce??? Did women keep their own name after a divorce in 1851?
How would I find the Poor Law records for the Aberdour area online?
I live in England.
I know that Janet Laird is a neice. Mary however was my great grandmother. She died in Aberdeen around 1918 during the 'flu epidemic.

Thank you all for caring. Thank you for showing me how to contribute to this thread. Thanks for the insight into Scottish maiden names whilst still married.
I still need to know however about the Poor Law Records and how to access them.
I would really like to know how it happened, in 1851, that my gt. Grandmother at 10 yrs old fell into such dire poverty.

It may be worth your while getting in touch with http://www.anesfhs.org.uk. They will send researchers to look out the Poor Records at Aberdeenshire Archives for a cost.
