I'm at a loss on my family tree with this side of my family. If this rings any bells??

My Grandad was James Anthony Scully born Bradford 1937 died 2009, his brother Keith was born 1935 and died 1935 . His Parents were Catherine (aka cathleen) and James Scully.


Catherines nee name is Dwyer, her mother a Sarah Ann Hefferan (some records have other spellings of the name, could also be Heffernan, Hefferman). There is also a Clarke family linked to the Dwyers with 3 siblings Mary. Kenneth and Laurie (Laurence).

There seems to be quite a lot of Alexander Dwyer's who could be your line.

Could this Alec be your Alexander? He's a drayman for the railway. Do you have the marriage certificate with his occupation?

This is where I am lost - theres the possibility they are from Ireland further back, were not sure. As Catherine was born in Bradford I assume her parents are also as she never mentioned her parents as being Irish

There are Military Records for Alexander Dwyer who married Sarah Ann Hefferman on 8 July 1911 at the Register Office, Manor Row, Bradford. There is one child Catherine born 3 March 1915 Bradford.

It looks like Alexander joined up on 26 April 1915 and his age was 24yrs & 140 days and occupation was Carter. He lived at 55 Aldophus Street, Wakefield Rd, Bradford

im looking at Scully side of tree (Bradford Yorkshire).

There is a catherine Armstrong (abt 1891-1925) married to John Scully (1890-1921) it looks as though she had 2 children after John died ( Marie and William)father unknown but they still had Scully surname.

I have found a William Scully(1924 - 1994) who married an agnes, they had 3 children who I believe to be Kevin, Shaun and Tracy.

Hi T, you'll often come across cases where a widow gave birth to children after the death of her husband (sometimes many years after) they would be recorded in the surname of the late father because that was the mother's surname when she gave birth. You may even find that her late husband is named as the father on the birth certificate even when it's not humanly possible - probably all to do with maintaining dignity.
