I am searching for Donald as I believe he was a relative of my grandfather. I can find no trace of him on any site. I have no clues as to his DOB but he sailed to Australia on the Northumberland in 1876 and was there when Ned Kelly was killed. He wrote a diary about his journey and a letter about Ned Kelly. He was probably a young man when he sailed from Plymouth to Melbourne. Hope someone can help.
Regards,
Marina

Hi Marina, how did you make the connection to your grandfather? Where were the family from?

(Just looking for clues to identify him)

I know it's completely the wrong continent and wrong age, but thought worth posting in case there's a connection:

Doesn't seem likely if he travelled to Australia in 1876.

Feedback needed from Marina!

patchem Report 7 Apr 2013 12:27

If Lucy died at 74 in 1918 then born 1844, so Donald probably 1840ish?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 7 Apr 2013 12:36

It would fit Patchem.

It's odd that the 1888 death didn't mention a wife but seems the same couple going by the address on each death notice.

There's this marriage:

Australia Marriage Index, 1788-1950

Name: Donald G Sutherland
Spouse Name: Lucy B Gordon
Marriage Date: 1884
Marriage Place: New South Wales
Registration Place: Sydney, New South Wales
Registration Year: 1884
Registration number: 1235

But as said above could do with feedback from Marina in case the wrong tree is being barked up!

Would help to know who her grandfather was and what relative Donald Gray is believed to be.

Thank you to everyone who has helped me in my search for info about Donald. I have been researching my family but Donald did not really feature as he was not directly connected. However, a family 'heirloom' in the form of a diary written by Donald is being transcribed by a cousin. In this diary he describes his voyage to Australia on SS Northumberland which sailed from Plymouth in October 1876 and arrived in Melbourne in November. He posted the diary home accompanied by a letter which describes how he saw the body of Ned Kelly and actually acquired a hair from the tail of Kelly's horse. There has been interest from Australia in respect of the letter. I am trying to pull together the info that proves, as we have been told that he wa our Grandpa's uncle. The family originated in Caithness and Watten, Mybster, Halkirk, Latheron Wheel, etc all feature heavily in my research.
What all of you have done for me today has been valuable beyond measure and on behalf on my family I thank you. :-)

pm from Marina (I think timed before the above post)

"Hello MarieCeleste,
Thank you for your interest. We know my Grandfather had an Uncle called Donald who was the son of James and Margaret. A diary was passed down the family as described in my posting. The family are from Caithness and I believe Mybster as Donald writes fondly of Mybster in his diary.
I believe he was born in about 1854.
Regards,
Marina"

So it all seems to fit.
