Can anyone help me find William Sherriff who married Margaret Cowling in 1836 in St Peter's Church, Liverpool? I cannot find where and when he was born - he was a mariner - and seems to have died in Spain but again I don't know where or when. Anybody help?

Reggie, I can now see her all census 1841-1881, all living in Salcombe and alone. Not much help at all! 1871 says she is widowed, 1861 appears to say unmarried?
I am unsure what can be done with this one to be honest.

Bit of a tangent I think, as obviously William could be from anywhere, but wondering if related somehow? This William is a master mariner:

Where born: Thurlstone, Devon, England

William Sheriff 41
Elizabeth Ann Sheriff 38
John Sheriff 14
Ann Hunham 75

The major drawback is that there is no way of knowing when or where William was born...........he didn't even have an obvious relation as a witness to his marriage

I know. Might be a dead end. Just thought it's an interesting co-incidence as the name isn't all that common, and Margaret seems to have spent all her days there after 1841.
I am going to put the above William's family just in case there ever turns out to be a link - the idea would be to investigate John and see if by any chance he had a brother William!

A pretty long shot I know.

1851 England Census
Name: John Sheriff
Age: 54
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1797
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Mary Sheriff

County/Island: Devon
Country: England

Registration District: Kingsbridge
Sub-registration District: Blackawton

John Sheriff 54
Mary Sheriff 63
William Sheriff 21 mariner

Hello Linda, where did you get the info about a potential death in Spain?

Have sent Linda a message to let her know she has some replies. (She might not want to see my offerings though!!).

Overseas deaths of British subjects are listed on FMP

Nothing for his name on either Maritime or Overseas deaths before 1895

There's this one - same age as the Margaret Sheriff in the 1851 census posted by brummiejan and Reggie:

UK and Ireland, Masters and Mates Certificates, 1850-1927 about William Sheriff
Name: William Sheriff
Estimated Age: 33
Birth Date: 4 Mar 1818
Birth Place: Bantham, Devonshire
Issue Date: 17 Feb 1851
Issue Port: Salcombe
Certificate Number: 47.435

And maybe a brother? Thurlstone parish includes Bantham.
But on perusing the various records, there do seem to be lots of Sheriffs (with various spellings) in Devon, especially around the Thurlstone area:

UK and Ireland, Masters and Mates Certificates, 1850-1927 about Richard Sherriff
Name: Richard Sherriff
Estimated Age: 32
Birth Date: 1820
Birth Place: Thirlstone, Devonshire
Issue Date: 19 Nov 1852
Issue Port: Salcombe
Certificate Number: 53.347
