Find Ancestors

Hi.

I have asked on here before regarding a relative (possibly this one), however, being new to genealogy, I think I may have angered some people by my lack of information.

So hopefully this time round it will be a happier situation.

My maternal grandfather Daniel Francis William John Butler was born on the 1st April 1918 in Charles Street, Silverton, London and died on the 1st December 1986 at his home in Bovey Tracey.

He was married to Edith Maud Jones (14/06/1922 - living) on 08/11/1940.

He served at sea on a ship my Grandmother believes was called the Barham, however, I cannot find any records for this and that he worked at the Woolwich Arsenal in the Chemical Laboratory.

His father was Thomas Henry Butler (1879 - 1975), born in South Africa. His mother was Hannah Sloan (1878 - ), born in South Shields, Durham.

His siblings were:
Margaret Hannah L Butler (1900 - ), born in West Ham, London,
Violet A E M Butler (c. 1900 - ),
Emily Victoria Butler (20/09/1903 - Oct/1999), born in West Ham, London, died in Crawley, West Sussex, married to a Charles D Russell (c.1890 - ), also born in West Ham, London,
Ivy Wilhelmina Butler (18/04/1906 - 25/12/1972), born in West Ham, London and died in Bromley, Greater London/Kent, married to a George Bartholomew West (1904 - 1980),
Edith Henrietta J Butler (08/07/1908 - 09/1988), born in West Ham, London and died in Greenwich, London, married to a Laurence John Thomas Feat (1903 - 1985).

Now I don't think I have done too bad to get this far after getting my grandfathers birth, death and marriage certificates, however, I have now come up against a brick wall.

I am trying to confirm some details about his father and mother, and beyond but getting nowhere. I know my great grandfather was born in 1879 (as confirmed by my Grandmother), however, that is all I can find out from South Africa.

Anything back past there is a mystery, so maybe somebody can help with any more information.

Google for info about South African BMD records

familysearch has images of South African baptisms and marriages but there are over 350000 images grouped by area and as you don't the area you would need to browse through a lot of images:
