Find Ancestors

Hello. I am trying to find parents and siblings for my 4xgreat-grandfather, Robert Bridle. I know that, at the time of his marriage to Patty Smith Bartlet in Lyme Regis in 1791, he was residing in that parish, but I do not know where or when he was born.

There is a burial for a Robert Bridle in Lyme Regis on 5 May 1829, and his age is given as 73. This could be my ancestor, because he raised his family in Lyme Regis and, presumably, stayed there.

I have looked for Robert's birth on Ancestry, Genes Reunited and Family Search, to no avail. Dorset FHS suggested Robert Bridle 1755 Combpyne. I followed that line for months, until I finally realized my mistake. The Combpyne Robert was still married when Robert Bridle married Patty.

I would be grateful for any help.

I doubt that someone born in the 1750's would still be fathering children in 1810. It doesn't seem likely to me that the Robert who died in 1823 was the same one who married Patty in 1791.

I did consider purchasing the CDs for births and marriages in Dorset, but I already have the parish records for the marriage of Robert and Patty, and the baptisms for their children.

I also asked Dorset FHS to look for the baptism records for Robert Bridle and Patty Smith Bartlett. They could find nothing for Patty/Martha, but suggested Robert Bridle b.1755 Combpyne - who, it turns out, is definitely not my ancestor.

If Robert was born around 1756, as his burial record suggests, I think it's quite feasible that his youngest child was born in 1810, especially since Patty/Martha was 11 or 12 years younger than him. (She appeared in the 1841 census as a widow, aged 73).

I am at a loss with Robert (and Patty). Mattie has suggested a baptism for Robert in Poole in 1758, which I am looking into, but, apart from that I have nothing. It's very frustrating!
