Joseph McCarthy (irish) moved 2 Manchester 1860/70

Daniel Report 13 Oct 2013 22:16

Hello all my Great great grandfather (b. circa 1855) moved from Dublin to Manchester some time in the 1860s or 70s. Possibly Liverpool first as his wife Annie Farrell is from there.

I am having trouble tracking him down. I know his fathers name as I have his marraige cert and on irishgenealogy.ie there is 1 possible baptism but I have no idea really if its him.

I was wondering if anyone had come across this problem before and knew how to go about solving it?

If anyone wants deatials I cab give them but I was wondering is there a immigration record that I can check or something. Any help would be really appreciated.

Danny

Hello Daniel, sadly there are no immigration records between Ireland and England (would make things so much easier if there had been).

Just to double check, is it his birth or marriage certificate that you have?

Daniel

Daniel Report 13 Oct 2013 22:25

Thank you MarieCeleste for such a quick reply and for noticing my mistake yes it is his marraige cert :-) I have it corrected now thanks again

Daniel Report 14 Oct 2013 00:23

Hi Kathleen

Thank you so much for your help. I cannot believe that I did not spot that before.
His father John McCarthy was a shoe maker in the marraige certificate. I wonder what relation if any the John in the above entry may be to Joseph?

They were married in 1876 and resided in Ancoats Manchester. Joseph was 22.

Thanks so much again.

The John McCarthy in the 1871 census was a Chair Maker. No occupation is given for Joseph. Perhaps they were brothers?

Danny....1881 shows an Owen Geo.McCarthy living with Joseph.....probably another brother.
There is a marriage of an Owen McCarthy to a Catherine Donnell Reg Man. March Quarter 1882...
May be worth checking it out.

Thanks a mil for your help. I done a bit of digging and found this:

Its a possible baptism cert for a joseph McCarhty and his fathers name matches as does city of birth. More importantly his mother is Jane MOODY, this is the family name that the 17 year old Joseph is living with in Dublin. As long as I can confirm that this 17 yo Joseph is the same as the one married to Annie in 1881 census I would be 99% sure this is his cert:

Name JOSEPH MC CARTHY
Date of Birth 28 May 1854
Address 6 JERVIS S
Father JOHN MC CARTHY
Mother JANE MOODY

Potty Report 17 Oct 2013 12:19

Daniel, where did that baptism take place? If I have found the right couple in 1911, Joseph gives his POB as Dublin; Annie's is Swansea.

I have so much info now after a morning digging:

I will show you what I have:

Also you can see in an above entry for a possible Joseph in 1871.

My Great Great Grandparents were Married in 1876 and I have the certificate if anybody needs to know any info that.

I guess what I am asking if anyone can help is to prove the link between the baptisms in Dublin and the census records in Manchester.

Any help as always is greatly appreciated and thank you all very much for everything so far :-)

Off to work now :-)

Wondered if a Dublin Directory might help. Found 6 Jervis Street on this site:

but 6 Jervis St is just shown as a tenement, no names or trades

Potty Report 17 Oct 2013 14:43

There does appear to be a surviving 1851 Dublin census - sorry don't have time at the moment to search for it but Google does bring up some hits. There is also mention of an 1861.

MC is correct - there are no such immigration records. Actually, from a technical point of view, it's hard to immigrate into the UK when you're already a resident of the UK.

Who was Annie's dad, and what did she say was his occupation?

Daniel

Daniel Report 3 Apr 2014 21:44

They were married on the 2nd of Dec 1876, Micheal Farrell was deceased at the time but his prof was labourer. Josephs Father was John and he was a shoe maker.

I am just trying to prove the link between Dublin and Manchester and I think the key is Owen Geston McCarthy as in the posts above?
