Catfr2009 Report 11 May 2014 19:08

George married twice that much we know. I've found a possible wife by the name of Jessie with children Jessie and Alexander but whether they are right or not I don't know. We know about Flora and the two children Neil and Jane though.. Anybody have any idea who George's first wife could be? Not sure who the medallion belonged to as loads of them were called George by the looks of it!!

Catfr2009 Report 11 May 2014 19:11

Jane's granddaughter has told us that her father mentioned an uncle George and uncle Jimmy who he said were his half uncles as it were so presumably these came from George's first marriage before Flora although who and where from I don't know as I haven't found any trace of them yet!

Eureka!

1905 MCFARLANE GEORGE M 74 WEST KILBRIDE /AYR 620/00 0004
George died 5/1/1905 in West Kilbride.
Widower of Jane Carruthers, married to Flora Baxter.
Cause of Death: Tumour of bladder - 6 months.
Informant: son James McFarlane, of 51 Breadalbane Street, Glasgow

So . . .
possibly their marriage:
1872 MCFARLANE GEORGE CARRUTHERS JANE BLYTHSWOOD GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/06 0049

Jane's death:
1876 MCFARLANE JANE CARRUTHERS F 33 KELVIN GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/09 0675

This is the birth of their son George:
1876 MCFARLANE GEORGE M KELVIN GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/09 1112
Born 5 August 1876, at 11 Myrtle Street.

Presumably Jane died in childbirth, or shortly thereafter.

Can't tell if they had any other children. There are 641 McFarlanes born in Glasgow 1872-6, and can't search using mms. If there were others, they're not with their brother in 1881 or 1891. (ADDED: James, the informant re George's death, must be a son from the first marriage.)

In 1881 and 1891 he's living with his aunt Jeanie (nee McFarlane) and uncle:

I wonder if this could be the son James?
Were he and George twins?? Though the GROS numbers aren't consecutive.

EDIT: No, he's no relation - I had a look.
This is costing me a fortune - but I'm hooked!

Here's the family in 1851:

1851 Scotland Census about Robert Brodie
Name: Robert Brodie
Age: 36
Estimated birth year: abt 1815
Relationship: Head
Spouse's Name: Elizabeth Brodie
Gender: Male
Where born: Arran, Island of
Parish Number: 521
Civil Parish: Kilmartin
County: Argyll
Address: Rounfield
Occupation: Gamekeeper To Poltalloch

Elizabeth Brodie 28
Elizabeth Brodie 8
John Brodie 6
Robert Brodie 4
Margret Brodie 1
John Mclachlan 22 - assistant gamekeeper
Mary McPhayden 22 - house servant
James Allan 28 - plumber at new mansion

Can't find Robert & Elizabeth's marriage. This is the only feasible marriage anywhere in Scotland, but I would have expected Elizabeth to have been married in Minnigaff. And I can't find an Eliza(beth) McFarlane born in Minnigaff. On the other hand, it would give us the McFarlane connection , as James is listed as their nephew in 1881:

12/03/1842 BRODIE ROBERT ELIZA MACFARLANE/FR460 (FR460) M KILMARTIN /ARGYLL 521/00 0020 0269

(Actually, I find this fascinating. I know Poltalloch House - was beautiful, now in ruins. Built 1851-9. And there's James Allan, a plumber at the new mansion, living with the Brodies! )

How do these Brodie's relate in???

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 11 May 2014 20:39

BRODIE, Robert. ASSAULTED
Roundfield, Kilmartin Parish, Gamekeeper to Poltalloch, 36 in 1851
MCFARLANE, James.
Slochavullain, Kilmartin Parish, Ground Officer, 64 in 1851

Re Arichonan:
In 1848 the landowner terminated the leases of four of the tenant families but when police came to enforce the evictions the villagers, supported by others from surrounding townships, rioted. Eventually several were jailed.

So looks like Elizabeth Brodie is the sister of George McFarlane and Jeanie McVean ms McFarlane?

ArgyllGran, can you do something with that link please as it is extending the page width. Think there is a way to shorten it but not sure how.

Catfr2009

Catfr2009 Report 11 May 2014 20:52

So Elizabeth Brodie was originally a McFarlane, brother of George and Jeanie then?

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 11 May 2014 20:58

I think it is certainly looking that way Catherine.

Elizabeth' s death certificate and Jeanie's would confirm the names of their parents. You can use both the maiden and married surnames to search for a female death on Scotlandspeople. You really need to buy some credits and not have ArgyllGran using hers.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 11 May 2014 21:02

Can't see any Eliza(beth) McFarlane born in Minnigaff around the right time.
There are these in Kilmartin area, but wrong parents:

07/02/1823 MCFARLAN ELIZABETH ALEXANDER MCFARLAN/CATHERINE MCFADEN FR456 (FR456) F GLASSARY /ARGYLL 511/00 0030 0034

14/06/1823 MCFARLAN ELIZABETH DONALD MCFARLAN/JANET CAMPBELL FR456 (FR456) F GLASSARY /ARGYLL 511/00 0030 0035

ADDED: Her sister Jean (McVean)'s birthplace varies from Kilmartin, to Kirkcudbrightshire or Dumfriesshire in the censuses, too.
