Hello,

I'm really feeling very confused. I have my grandfathers birth certificate which names him as William Hitchen. I have a photo of the grave which says William Hitchen. I also have the marriage certificate which names him JOHN WILLIAM HITCHEN...he has signed J W Hitchen. No one in the family knew him as John William Is it the same man????

Can anyone throw any explanation on this because I am seriously thinking I have the wrong marriage cert and yet my grandmothers name is correct....I;m very confused

Grandad William Hitchen was born 1882 in Whiston Rotherham Yorkshire. He died in Whiston Rotherhm 1958 and married in Middlesborough 1906

It's not unusual for someone to be known by their second name especially if the first name was the same as the father's.

perhaps he just preferred the name John. people can call themselves whatever they like, as long it's not with intent to deceive or defraud

My problem is that on the birth and even his grave stone there is no mention of him having the name John. His father was George born 1842 in Barnsley.

Its just strange that the marriage cert says John William and yet no one in my family has ever heard of this name for him

Jacqueline Yes thats the marriage record from which I sent for the certificate. I agree he may have used John William to get married but its strange he never used it in day to day things just on the marriage cert.

It looks as though I have the right record but its still strange don't you think

Thank you everyone for all your help. I can see there is a lot of information on the family which I haven't got so I am very grateful to you for helping me.

As for my Granddad..I guess only he knows why he called himself John, I am relieved though that I have the right certificate and hadn't married him off to someone unknown.
