Ahhhh well, that rules that out then. I can't see any other possibilities,

I think if Thomas was a seaman he was prob not with family in many of the census

Wonder if this might be something to consider. Could Minnie be another name for Jane maybe?

I know the fathers name isn't right and the surname is a bit off, but might be worth looking into.

I wonder if this could be her father a thomas on a vessel in 1881 without family.

Hardy could easily be mistranscribed as Hasbey.

Very kind of you to pay attention,David.

ALSO (see above re 1861 census entry))
Compare first letter of ?assby with H of Hutchins - not alike
AND
I think the last name is Wm - not Tom

BUT thanks for all your efforts! I watch these threads closely!

You have all been busy again - Thank you all.
The 1861 census entry can be found on Ancestry by searching for Isaac Hutchins. They have the other surname as Sassby - and I think I agree - compare first letter with S of the Susans (above)

I'm trying to rule out "Hassby"

CelticShiv

CelticShiv Report 13 Sep 2014 05:04

this is the Thomas from 1861 in 1871 I believe

Name: Thos Hamby
Age: 35
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1836
Relation: Ab (Seaman)
Gender: Male
Where born: Titchfield, Hampshire, England
Civil Parish: Vessels
Town: Woosung River Shanghai

Country: England
Registration district: Royal Navy
Sub-registration district: Royal Navy
ED, institution, or vessel: Hornet
Household schedule number: 1

from ancestry.

I think this most likely rules him out as Jane Anne's father

Isaac and Elizabeth married in 1860 .........

from freebmd ..........

Marriages Dec 1860 (>99%)

Hutchens Isaac Abraham Portsea 2b 686
Sowersby Elizabeth Ann Portsea 2b 686

Looking at the image of the entry .............. Elizabeth's surname is indeed Sowersby

I cannot find "Tom Hassby" in 1871 on ancestry
