Just looking at the Carlisle Grammar School register.

If he left July 1901 and went to America then as he was 13 it would seem logical that the family went. Would he really have gone on his own at that age?

In case it's useful, birth date 25 June 1888.

David

David Report 28 Sep 2015 18:10

Looking for Alexander Holliday born at 4. Temperley Place, Hexham Northumberland 25 June 1888 he was educated at Carlisle Grammar School where he was when the 1901 census was taken.

He appears to have joined the Merchant Navy as an apprentice 31 October 1905 at the age of 17 he is reported to stayed there until 1909, after that searches of all records show nothing.

It was said many years ago that he had left the family home after getting involved with a village girl from Corbridge where the family lived from 1894 onwards, in the Carlisle Grammar School book of 1901 it notes that Alexander had joined at the spring term but had left in July and reportedly had gone to America.
