Hi, I have been looking for John Steele a long time and I really need to correspond with someone doing genealogy in Leslie Fife. Have tried Fife genealogy group but they had no info on people In Leslie.. I was visiting Scotland last year and went to Leslie for the day. Small town all closed up, no one seemed to know anyone doing genealogy work. ( shop girl, Church secretary, woman with Steele surname ) HELP please.
Thank you in advance for any help at all.
Cheers,

The John Steele that I am looking for worked in Leslie, Fife, at a mill as in his son John's wedding certificate the parents were listed as John Steele mill worker. The son was born 1845 in leslie or Inverkeithing. The son born just a little earlier (James was born in Leslie in 1843), after the 1851 census in Inverkeithing I cannot find any information on James. So The mother of John and possibly James was Isobella Douglas. as shown on the son John's wedding cert. The son John is my great grandfather. all is known about him. So that is why I am looking for someone in or around Leslie who does Genealogy to see if I can be directed to where I might find info on John sr.

Who, when & where did John jnr marry? Is his father shown as deceased on the marriage cert?

Potty

Potty Report 17 Nov 2015 12:51

As both John & James were receiving Parish Relief in 1851, there might be some info in the Kirk Session Records These are not on line but are held in the National Records of Scotland:

http://catalogue.nrscotland.gov.uk/nrsonlinecatalogue/welcome.aspx

Unfortunately, they can only be viewed by visiting. The catalogue ref is CH2/696 .

If you watch the boards, you may find someone who is visiting and offering to do look ups.

Hi Potty,
John Jr was married 14.07/1876 9 new street Pollokshaws, Glasgow. and on the wedding certificate he said that his father and mother were deceased.

MALYON, That James Steele is the wrong age in 1907 my James would have been64 years old, But thank you for your interest.

Potty, Yes that John Steele age 6 is the person who married in 1876 I Pollokshaws.

You are correct about the boys being on parish relief, I will have to look into the national records some how.

Cheers,

Grey Ghost,

The reasoning for John Steele Sr working in Leslie is that the sons were born in Leslie, and on John Jrs wedding certificate he wrote that the Father John was deceased at the time of the wedding.

Thank you for your interest.

Afraid I'm not finding anything for John snr or James :-(

Jack

Jack Report 18 Nov 2015 04:13

I want to thank all of you who tried to answer my querie. A few items to ponder I think.

The 1861 census John Steele Boorn 1845 and a grocers messenger is most probably My great grand father. And his brother James who I can not find much of anything is noticeably missing. .
Re the 1901 census, Catherine Steele born 1877, at this time she was in a sanitorium as she had contracted TB from her mother who also died age 28 from TB.. Catherine died about 1913 in the sanitorium.

Again thank you.
