Oh, and just to add on the original baptism for Susannah and Elizabeth it gives DOB:

I wonder if it's worth looking at the Petty Sessions around the times that Susan James' children were born. Maybe she sued the father for maintenance.

In 1851, Thomas James born 1817 Salisbury (grocer's assistant) is lodging in Sheffield. He is married,but has no wife with him.

Susannah James b.1854 and Elizabeth James b.1856 were baptised on the same day in 1860, in Westminster. The parents were given as Thomas and Caroline James. So it looks like Thomas left Maria Allen and moved in with Caroline, around 1860, who may have urged him to have his daughters baptised.

The children he had with Caroline - Caroline, Sarah and James - were all baptised shortly after they were born.

The 1881 states Susan James aged 4 is dau to the head. ,,who is Susan James,not Maria Allen.

In 1891 Susan and Maria are living at 11 Cunnington Street (not Cunningham Street as stated in your opening post), so this looks to be young Susan's marriage (although I suspect the father's name could be made up!):

Can't see her in 1871, under either name.

But if Maria had children out of wedlock, surely any children would have her surname of Allen, not James?

I cannot find her birth under either surname of Allen or James.

A possibility, maybe.

Re Maria:
Stating "married" or "widowed" may just be for respectability if she had children outside marriage.

Marcus, how have you got back to Susan? There are two Susan James's in Middlesex in 1881, both living in St George Hanover Sq, with an older Susan. This is the other one:
