Hi Everyone

I'm hoping someone with access to the 1939 Census Register can please do me a huge favour and send me the original record for Reginald Alfred Vivian PUGH and his wife Hannah nee Watt.

Have been told by elderly relative that Reg married Hannah Mary Ruth Watt who was a actress sometime around 1937-1939 but have been unable to find a marriage record for them.

I'm awaiting a reply from GR regarding 10 credits I used for British Newspaper items that wouldn't show in search window showing that Hannah Watt was sued for slander around 1939 and said she was now married and her name was now Pugh.

Reg was married three times, Louise Graham-Seatoun, Hannah Watt and then Shirley (Irene) Hazel Swain. Have also been told he was in the Queens Guard and the Welsh Fusiliers but have found nothing to confirm his military record. Can't find any records for either of them in the 1940's to 1957 when he married Irene. And have been unable to find divorce records for his marriage records to Louise and Hannah.

Appreciate any help you can give please ;-)

Kind Regards
Tracy

She is shown with the surname Pugh, then Watt is written above ........... which indicates that she later returned to her maiden name.

dare I suggest that Reginald and Hannah did not marry, but merely lived together?

OR that they did not marry in England or Wales.

SylviaInCanada Report 16 Mar 2016 04:10

Is the family story about Reginald's war service for WW1 or WW2?

Both are rather difficult ............

Only about 30% of the records for servicemen in WW1 survived WW2 ............ a bombing of the building where they were being stored and associated fire resulted in the loss of the majority. In addition, most of the ones that have survived may only be 1 or 2 pages, or with very damaged pages.

Records for officers in WW1 are in better shape.

Records for WW2 are not on line, and are released only to close family kin .......... spouse, then children.

You might want to post a message on the Military Chat Board to see if anyone of the more knowledgeable people on there can help.

I did find a WW1 Medal Card for a Reginald Pugh who was in the Welsh Guards on ancestry ........... but that is all the identification there was ................... and Reginald Pugh per se is not an uncommon name.

British Army WWI Medal Rolls Index Cards, 1914-1920

Name: Reginald Pugh
Regiment or Corps: The Royal Welsh (Welch) Fusiliers
Regimental Number: 61330
Other Records: Search for 'Reginald Pugh' in other WWI collections

BTW ...................

the actual image of the 1939 Register will not tell you much more than what I posted above.

Did you realise that you can do a free search of the 1939 Register on FMP?

You just cannot open the image.

Hi Sylvanian

You are so great for doing all that searching ;-) .

Just wondering, on the original of the 1939 Register for Hannah, does it say Theatrical Article or Actress?

Yes I knew that Reg's first wife had been married prior to him, tracing her Kasanof routes has been impossible.

Yes! I have often thought that Reg & Hannah weren't married. I just found a marriage for her to a fellow actor by the name of Roderick Guy Lovell PANK in 1957. Then found her death in 1969 registered in Westminster. Apparently Reg was a merchant and did a lot of trade in South Africa but so far have only found one passenger list in 1938 with Reg & Hannah on it, she is listed under her maiden name Watt. Wondered whether they may have married in South Africa, found some free marriage records for SA but they aren't listed. I know actresses used their stage name more than their married name back then for anonymity but she really is a bit of an enigma as I can't find any photo's online for her but found one of her 2nd husband...for someone who liked being in the limelight I'm quite surprised.

Appreciate all you've found, enjoy the rest of your day :-D

One last look before I go to bed :-D

?? from ancestry ..........

London, England, Electoral Registers, 1832-1965

Name: Louise Graham Seatoun
Year: 1933
County or Borough: Westminster
Ward or Division/Constituency: City of Westminster
Street address: 43 e'22'Ma3r

The address is actually 43 South Molton Street, W.1

Then there is the additional information:- Mrs (abode 55 Bartholomew Road, N.W.5)

The same sort of additional information is given for many of the entries for Molton Street.

There is no other information .......... but I wonder if it means that the Molton Street addresses were for businesses of some sort (eg, shops)

Thanks Sylvanian...

Yes! I noticed the Electoral Rolls had double entries for Louise, bit of a mystery. In online records are there any that can be checked under her name that would show if she ran a business at that address....hope that makes sense!! No hurry, nite.

Cheers
