28 March 1845 - Chelmsford Chronicle - Chelmsford, Essex, England
Hannah, the wife of James Lodge, of Philpot-End, Dunmow, deposed that the deceased, whose remains she had just seen again, was the child of Hester Lodge, witness's daughter, a single woman; it was born Monday, the 10th instant, and died on the following Thursday...
(a Mr. Saltmarsh, guardian for Parish of High Easter, had said that a male illegitimate child born at Philpot End Dunmow, had been given laudanum, body was exhumed from Dunmow Churchyard, inquest held, turned out baby had 'inflammation of the lungs'...)
(mother thought perhaps baby had stomach ache, gave it 2 drops of gin in gruel, it kept moaning all the afternoon and night, so that she got no reat with it, she gave it nothing else at all, next day sent Sarah Williams to Dunmow for some castor oil, she gave it half a teaspoon in witness's presence...
(Mr. Saltmarsh although formally warned to attend the inquest, did not come, and the Coroner remarked that as Mr. S was entirely the instigation of the enquiry, his absence was disrespectful both to the coroner and the jury.)
