Have worked through the detail that you folks so kindly and so quickly provided and it all adds up.. as suggested, Johns became Jones on Ann's Death record.. perhaps a result of her husbands, the informants, Cornish accent.. Just moments ago, after writing it all up, downloading census copies etc.. I went back and had a look, again, at the Omega's passenger list and found there , one last piece that confirms the Johns surname for Ann Rodgers Johns / Best.. her brother William, the 9 year old from the 1841 Census, appears also, in the Omega’s passenger list for the 17th Jan 1854 arrival in Melbourne, as a 22 year old, accompanied by presumably his wife, 22 year old Elizabeth.. so more for me to do with this twig yet but again.. Many Thanks to All as I had been stalled on the “Jones” for quite some time. ( perhaps I'd better look at that passenger list again )

Gee Report 10 Sep 2016 09:53

I would guess that the name 'Jones' may have been either a mis-transcription or misheard when entering the details on the death certificate?

These people are living on the same street in 1851. William and Catherine could well be Ann's parents

That’s them Chris Ho.. though the original of the Omega’s passenger list details it sailing from Plymouth on the 30th of Oct 1853, arriving Melbourne 17th of Jan 1854..( 4th, my error in reading the scan ) Thomas & Anne Best, 34 & 26, being the first two listed ( alpha ).. As you note though.. http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/australia/aust1850s.shtml#victoria says 30 Jan – 4 May. A good exercise though as it made me look at the original of the passenger manifest.. 30 Oct – 4 Jan seemed very fast.. I think now, that it actually reads as arrival on the 17th of Jan 1854.. and to support this, in Trove's digital copy of the Argus Newspaper of the 26th of Jan, the Omega is recorded as being moored in “Hobson’s Bay and the River, January 25th 1854”. The “theshipslist.com” reference would seem then, to be in error, or a like named vessel.

Many thanks.. Shirley / Gins.. the detail re the 1808 marriage of Thomas Best & Elizabeth Andrews, the 1819 baptism of Thomas are all great news. Thank you to Chris Ho though.. not sure re the Best / Johns marriage or the other references to Johns.. is that likely to be a transcription error as Thomas Best’s spouse was a Jones, by her death record, where the informant was Thomas so you’d imagine he had it right, at Jones not Johns. Regards all.

Wayne Kenneth Report 10 Sep 2016 04:59

I’ve a GG G.father, Thomas Best, who arrived in Melbourne, aboard the Omega, sailed from Plymouth on the 30th of Oct 1853, arrived Jan 1854, with his wife Ann(e) nee Jones, both described as of Cornwall. Ann died in 1865 and her death record gave her age as 40, inferring 1825 ( though her passenger records in 1853/54 say 26 ie 1827/28 ) , and married at age 21 to Thomas, so in the range 1846 to 1849, no children, born in Cornwall, & that her parents were William & Catherine. In 1866 Thomas remarried & in that record, his parents were given as Thomas Best & Elizabeth Andrews, his age as 45 ( 1821, matches with passenger record, age 34 ) and birth place as Cornwall. I’ve not been able to find any Marriage or Census record for Thomas & Ann, or indeed, any similar record for my 3 times Great G'parents William & Catherine Jones or Thomas Best & Wife Elizabeth ( nee Andrews ).. if anyone can see through the forest re these 3 couples, I’d be most appreciative.. I’ve all detail post arrival, just nothing prior.
