Grania Report 30 Sep 2016 17:24

I am trying to find out more information about my ancestor Francis McCudden (b 1808 in Loughgall, Co Armagh) who emigrated to Australia in 1841 with his wife Eliza (Elizabeth? Née Riley or Reily) and their children. We have information about their lives in Australia but know next to nothing about their lives in Ireland, nor the family members who remained in Ireland. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Grania Report 1 Oct 2016 08:23

Hi Maddie and Mallon
Thank you so much for confirming the information I have about Francis' arrival etc in Australia, along with his year and place of birth in Ireland. It seems that we may have to give up on trying to locate any information about his father Francis and mother Mary. The only thing that may exist is some folk memories and we will try to chase that up as we are currently visiting Ireland.

Grania......I hope I am following the right Henry...!!

On 8.10.1816 Henry McCudden was granted land in St Peter's Parish Prospect....

Portion 138
Henry McCudden arrived in the colony as a convict in 1796. He received a conditional pardon,
and was farming at Airds by 1813.
He also acted as a police constable for a time
In 1823 a clearing party was employed to reap wheat on his farm in the Campbelltown District. (NSW State Records Colonial Sec.Index)
In 1833 McCudden and his wife were still farming their property
. His nephew arrived as a convict in 1830, and McCudden applied
for him as an assigned servant, to assist on the farm (Liston 1988: 43-44).

Check out this link for everything relating to Henry (NSW Index) and Eliz.

Thank you again Eringobragh.
I was interested to read that you've said Henry was tried in 1797 because the information we have was that it was in 1796 and he arrived in Botany Bay in 1797. Can you advise where you found the information about his trial?
The information about the two convict servants is also new to my
Dad and me. Thank you.

Grania...I think the date of 1897 (convicted) has been an error he was definitely tried 1896.
