Perhaps his birth wasn't registered. It wasn't a legal requirement at that time. I'm not seeing a possible entry on the indexes on freebmd

Hi I need some help please
I have sent to the GRO twice now for a birth certificate for Frederick Etherington who is my Great grandfather, and both times it came back could not find?? here is what I have on him.
I have a copy of his Bapt: certificate which states he was bapt: Dec 19 1841, in the parish of Felkirk in the county of York, and also states on it he was born Nov 1st ,but no year? his parents where John & Elizabeth Etherington, abode at the time is listed as Haw Park in the parish of Sandal.
On a copy of a 1851 census in Ryhill, I have him as age 9 and father is a widow
On a 1871 census in Barnsley at some sort of instituted he is 28 and a porter
I have a copy of his marriage Certificate age 28 in 1872 Barnsley where he married Christiana Binns. and occupation listed as county court officer.
On a 1881 census in Shafton age 39 born Ryhill, occupation Gardener
On a 1891 census in Shafton age 46? (maybe 49) occupation Gardener
I have his parents as John Etherington and Elizabeth Etherington nee Rogerson. which on some of the above show up as John and Elizabeth Etherington to confirm it, so my question is why can't GRO come up with a birth certificate? or have I got some of it wrong in my tree???? Help please
