hi
can anyone find baptism of samuel duxbury , listed as son on the 1881 census of jane duxbury nee tattersall. her husband mark duxbury died in 1875 in oswaldtwistle . Mark was born in 1848. I have found baptism of his sister sarah ann duxbury also on the same census at a later date of 1887 as an adult. From dates given samuel would have been born around 1870 and Sarah ann born 1873. This would make samuel either born out of wedlock or could he be a son of mark or a son of jane ? I have tried looking for samuel tattersall births etc and none really fit in. Not sure where to go from here.
help.
thanks :-)

Eileen- mother's surname for that Samuel is Kelly. Not sure how that fits. If you don't think Samuel Jennings birth that I posted above is correct, could you please explain why?

I wonder why she married under the name Tattersall, when the census and mmn for the 1872 birth show her as Jennings??

For what it's worth, I think the birth posted by AQ is the right one.

AustinQ Report 30 Jul 2017 12:45

Less embarrassment? Better to have a father listed than not?

Flip

Flip Report 30 Jul 2017 12:50

Good point Austin, similar to my grandmother - but she married under her birth name but her stepfather was also listed under that name, rather than his correct name!

There was another Duxbury/Tattersall marriage in 1870 in Haslingdon, which I believe accounts for the other children found.

06 May 1876 - Launceston Weekly News, and Cornwall & Devon Advertiser

A YOUTHFUL BIGAMY
John Chippendale 22, a pointman on the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, has been committed by the Accrington magistrates for trial on the charge of bigamy.
Prisoner was 19 when he married his first wife Frances Clegg, at the Parish church of Middleton

On 25th of March last, he married Jane Duxbury, a young collier's widow, who had two children. The prisoner alleged that his second wife knew he had another wife, but this she stoutly denied, and stated that as soon as she knew he had a wife living she left him.

(references Mark Duxbury 1875 on above, had below info.)

I have also found a mention of a mining accident of a mark duxbury aged 28 at aspen colliery in oswaldtwistle in 1875, where it says roof fell in. But it does not say wether mark was killed or just injured.
