Samuel died in Glasgow 5 th June 1915. His brother John died in Glasgow in 1912.

Just checked the death Reg. His widow registered the death by make her mark. Will try to find her death to see who registered it.

Using the free search, Samuel and Eliza don't seem to have any children in 1911

Yes, Rootsireland is misleading- I believe it's in their small print somewhere about the limited searches, but it is certainly not made obvious.

I haven't found the site much use overall- and many of the records are becoming available on Familysearch and other genealogy sites. I don't think I'd pay to use it again- it's probably more useful sharing extra searches with a few people as Gins has done.
---------------------------------------------

RG- do you know what happened to John's brother, Samuel, after he married Elizabeth Hadden?

Couldn't agree more Gins, a subscription should give as many searches as time permits. I really appreciate the help that you and AustinQ have given me. I wouldn't even try to calculate how much I've spent on this hobby over the last 40 years. I'm just glad I've a fair number of Scots in my family and that the whole of OH's maternal side are Scots through and through as Scottish research is much cheaper. I've a lot of Irish on my side and OH's Granny was from Sussex but he must be the only "Weegie" that I know without any Irish blood in him. :-D

Root

Don't apologise for making use of the offer, that's what the threads here for!

I think my sub to rootsireland expires Sept 24 so make use of it. I cant find much for my lot but it's daft not helping others when it's bought and paid for :-)

Mind you, this site (GR) is a sham at the moment........timing out/page cannot be displayed etc :-|

And just a note for others thinking about paying for a sub to rootsireland. The searches are limited. I paid twenty odd quid for a months sub which allows 12000 searches(they didn't make that clear) I think that's a bit cheeky, a sub is a sub in my mind!

Yes, it could very well be as John had a daughter named Elizabeth but mostly used Eliza and there's no Eliza or Elizabeth's on his wife's side.

Apologies Gins for taking over your thread but I'm quite excited by the progress after so many years. At least all these replies are keeping the thread near the top of the board :-)

Looking at this from a different point and trying to get as much info from Rootsireland before it runs out.

On the marriage of William Mulholland and Mary Quinn, Williams father was Samuel (labourer) and address was Derrycrew. So thought this could be a possible sister to William?

I know what you mean about the name AustinQ. Every time I look on SP ther's more and more of them!

I'm liking the look of that marriage for Joseph and I think the family are back in Ireland by the 1901 census. I wonder if that Joseph is a brother or half brother to my John. I find it hard to believe that my grandfather, Joseph, was the only son of John and Jane not to be named for a family member. They even had 2 Williams and 2 Johns because the first of each didn't survive infancy.

It's not easy to sort all the Mulhollands- there seem to be more every time I look!. This looks to be the birth of that William James:-

This maybe was the family, I was thinking about as John and his wife and family stayed in this street from when they married until the early 1900s. In those days the way to get a flat was for a relative to speak to their factor on your behalf.

1881 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription
14, Francis Street, Govan, Tradeston, Lanarkshire, Scotland

Joseph Mulholland Head Married Male 27 1854 Dye Wood Mill Labourer Ireland
Ann Mulholland Wife Married Female 25 1856 - Ireland
William James Mulholland Son - Male 1 1880 - Ireland

I think that I need a trip through to the Scotlandspeople centre and spend a day trawling through all the BMDs for the Mulhollands in that area in that time scale.

Thanks AustinQ. I probably checked the original census years ago - back in the days before internet transcriptions were available! Young Samuel married Jeanie Dunlop in 1900 and gave his age as 20 and his father as John and his mother as Eliza Jackson, deceased. I have all his descendants as they all remained in Glasgow. Although I've never found a marriage for his parents, my gut feeling is that they were married as my Mum thought John was quite a religious man although sadly she never knew him as he died before she was born. I'll need to check my notes but I vaguely remember that I found John living with other Mulhollands in Glasgow before he married Jane.

I'm not sure anything is any clearer today! I still can't find a definite connection for Isaac and your John.

Just in case there is a connection- These are the births of children coming up on RootsIreland for Isaac and Sarah Stothers:

Civil Birth Mulholland Thomas 1875 Co. Armagh (address Derrycrew)
Civil Birth Mullholland Isaac 1877 Co. Armagh (address Derrycrew)
Civil Birth Mullholland Rosanna 1884 Co. Armagh (address Derrycrew)
Civil Birth Mulholland James 1886 Co. Armagh (address Derrycrew)
Civil Birth Mulholland Mary 1889 Co. Armagh (Address Derrycrew)
Civil Birth Mullholland Emily 1897 Co. Armagh ( Address Coragh)
------------------------------------

For reference if anyone else fancies a go at this.

This is John and his wife in 1891 (Transcription for Samuel jnr gives age as 4- did you check the original RG? Only you said he was born c1880):

1891 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription

---------------------------------------

Brother Samuel married Elizabeth Wright (nee Hadden), widow in 1895 and also gave his parents as William Mulholland (labourer deceased) and Mary nee Quinn
------------------------------------

I'll try and come back to this in a bit

RG- the Isaac marriage was taken from RootsIreland.

There are some marriage records for a Joseph Mulholland- I'm short on time now (I was supposed to be out the door 10 minutes ago!)

I'm around in the morning so will have another look at possible siblings tomorrow (my mind will be calmer).

No problem AustinQ. Perhaps Issac was a son from William's first marriage. John named one of his daughter's Sarah and there's none on his wife's side so perhaps he named her for Isaac's wife. The only other child of John's that I haven't connected to family is Joseph but I suspect John had a brother Joseph as I found a possible army record for a Joseph who names a NOK as a brother John - just off to check that out again. John also had a daughter Elizabeth who appears on some records as Eliza. Again no Elizabeth's or Eliza's on his wife's side.
