Dea

When was she born?

A Tree at Ancestry has her born 1852 in Lancashire?

Dea

Dea Report 2 Sep 2017 13:42

This is a VERY long shot and I don't know what sort of info you can find on that site but I hav Margaret McLoughlin who married in Lancashire in January 1871.

I have a feeling she might have come from Ireland somewhere. There is a son Thomas born c1868 (who 'might' belong to her??) and Margaret disappears completely by the time of the 1871 census, although I have found another possible child of her's born in Lancashire c1872?

Her father was John who was a 'bricksetter'

Would it be possible to find anything perhaps on journeys for her to England prior to 1871 or a return journey in or before 1872 when her name could be Fenton ?

She was born c1853.

Thanks Ginns,

Dea x

That is really kind of you. Hoping you could help try and find this person. I have Jeremiah Harrington bn 1829 in Cork Ireland. His father is down as john who was a farmer labourer. Jerry has been found in the 1851 when he travelled and lived in Dowlais Merthyr Glamorgan Wales. He married Ellen Golden/Goulding in 1853. She was also from Ireland. I have found no way of tracing any of Jeremiah siblings or mother as I have not found his birth.
Would appreciate any help with info.
Thank you in advance.

Eringobragh1916 Report 1 Sep 2017 18:05

Christina.....

This may help give you an insight into the conditions the Skelly family lived in Turners Cottages....(not uncommon)

From Irish Times article 2014.

Ballsbridge, Dublin’ s embassy belt, once had its very own slum, Turner’ s Cottages, close to the top of Shelbourne Road and almost opposite the present day Oval development.

Richard Turner, a noted 19th century ironfounder, opened his Hammersmith Works on Pembroke Road in 1834. They made the roof of what is now Pearse station in Westland Row, the great botanical greenhouses at Glasnevin, Belfast and Kew, most of the garden railings in Ballsbridge and did business as far away as Russia.

Today, Hume House is there, while next door, the Number One, Ballsbridge, scheme of luxury apartments and offices is being built on the old veterinary college site.

Turner built a collection of cottages at the back of his site to house his workers and they remained in place for many years after the iron works moved in 1876 to North King Street, on the other side of the city. The cottages weren’t demolished until just over 40 years ago, at which stage, there were still close on 20 left. Outsiders, but not the people living there, called it “ The Gut”.

The cottages each had two large downstairs rooms; most had no kitchens, although in later years some had tiny kitchenettes. People cooked on either a large open fire or on a range. Coal was fetched from a nearby coal yard in prams and stored beneath the stairs. Upstairs, there were two bedrooms, with wrought iron fireplaces and a small boxroom, but no lavatory or bathroom. In earlier days, a different family lived in each room, so that one house had four families.

People living there had to queue to use the outside lavatory in the yard and wash themselves in front of the fire in the living room.

Families living in the cottages shared a tap in the yard for water and for washing clothes, which were hung to dry on lines, worked with pulleys that stretched from one side of the small enclave to the other.

On the original census the place name looks a little like Balktoss, but I can't see any place that resembles that. Age for Edward is unclear.

On his death 22nd October 1901, Edward was listed as age 52 (army pensioner). His wife Esther of 3 Turner's Cottages was in attendance

WOW again - thank you - yes - that my Michael b Bandon 1831 - my g/grandad's brother....

All I had was
Michael Bryan b Bandon 1832 ......from 1861 census found because of dau Mary Ann b1861 Gravesend was 'visitor' to George & Mary Bryan in Lambeth on 1881 census. (otherwise I wouldn't've known of Michael)

(seems they were vagrants ...-in Cork ... I even queried once where was 'Vagus' ?(shown on g/grandad's bapt in Dunmanway) .... only to be told 'of no fixed address'.

Thank you so much Gins.

Hi Gins. if the offer is still open, I would appreciate a baptism please.

Details are very sketchy.

Edward Skelly age in 1901 census, Dublin, given as 39 on transcription, but could be 37 or 57 or 59 looking at the image.

Place of birth illegible but looks like it begins Bal?

Father's name from marriage is John.

Thanks, Christina.
