There's no indication on either record of medals awarded that it was returned or refused.

As to where they are now - you could trace down via his siblings to see if they kept them. Its always possible that he or his wife himself threw them out.
Many ex-servicemen didn't want to keep a permanent reminder of a terrible experience.

A relative recalls being allowed playing with his father's until the late 1920's, then they disappeared. The medals were considered everyday objects surplus to requirements.
