Tracing ancestors on my aunt Eleanors side (Kell-nee Millar).Got as far back as the 1881 census & her grandfather-William Miller (Millar). He married a Sarah Jane - - - - - in Ireland pre 1859.They were still in Ireland (probably Belfast area) in 1874,so not on the 1871 census in England. They're on the 1881 census in my hometown-Barrow-in-Furness.If anyone's got access to Irish records & could possibly do me a look up ? William's said to of been born in Belfast? 1836.Sarah Jane 1836 too.
I'd love to get back further,so ANY help/info/advice much appreciated.
CHEERS.

Thanks for your help. I don't think John Herbert Miller is William & Sarah Millers son though? She'd be 50 by that time? Not impossible? I'll check the 1891 census & marriages.

ArgyllGran Report 23 Nov 2017 14:41

1881 says John Herbert is a nephew, and he's a ship steward on SS "Antrim".

Andysmum Report 23 Nov 2017 15:56

My grandfather was born in Brick Cottages (1881 census above) which was a slum for immigrant catholic Irish working in the shipyards. The family came from Armagh and I managed to get quite a lot further back on this site.

https://registers.nli.ie

Some of them are so faint that they are almost impossible to read, but others are fine.

Good luck.

Paul, you may also want to check out Scotland records - my ancestors were also living at Brick Cottages in 1881, having originated from Scotland. Their children were born in a mixture if Ireland/Scotland/Barrow - they moved around a lot working in shipyards, before settling in Barrow. My great grandfather was also a riveter in the shipyard.

If you are still local, the local records office has some really interesting information and pictures of Brick Cottages. They also have the local church registers and burial records which can be pretty useful.

Andysmum

Andysmum Report 25 Nov 2017 15:30

I agree with Flip. The Family History section in the public library is an excellent source of information. The term "Brick Cottages" is, I think, a euphemism, as they are more generally known as the Brick Huts. They were so insanitary that the council ordered that they be demolished in the 1880's. How any babies survived is a miracle.

My great-grandfather was a general labourer. Back in Ireland he worked on the roads, but, according to family stories, helped himself to some of the materials and fled to England to escape retribution!!

Flip

Flip Report 25 Nov 2017 16:50

Not many babies did survive, they were hit with smallpox (or was it scarlet fever, my notes are at home sorry) in the early 1880s and like Andysmum says it was a really bad place to be in, and known locally as the brick huts. Right next to Walney channel, they were unprotected from the elements, had no running water or gas supply, no sanitation - just ditches for sewage.

A lot of people living there moved to the "Scotch Buildings" on Barrow Island a large development of tenemant buildings built in the late 1870s to try to cope with the large influx of workers for the mining, iron/steel works and shipbuilding.
