Well AustinQ I think you may have found him because the name Barton Regis rang a bell. His nephew, my great grandfather met his wife in Barton Regis. I wondered why he went there and found it was for work, but didn’t know why that area. Edwin’s brother John was my g grandfathers father so that may be the connection that took George ( g grandfather) to Barton Regis which is now part of Bristol not Glos.
I’ll keep investigating Edward and see what else I can find.
Thank you
Glyn

I don’t see the name Sainsbury on any of the children. It is the mothers maiden name and they are in Bratton near Westbury but there are a few large families if Holloway’s in the area so I haven’t seen Henry on the census records as being in this family.

Hi Chris some of that is correct. I haven’t seen the 1851 census only 1841 and 1861 so didn’t know about Ellen!!
They lived in Bratton near Westbury, not the Devizes branch
Martha Matilda 1844-1910 is his sister. Edwin b 1847. Father George Holloway 1816-1896 and mother Elizabeth Sainsbury 1817-1884
Not the same as Martha A Sainsbury.
Does that help to clarify?

I have found Edwins sometimes change to Edward or Edmund in records.

If you find any of these alternatives, which can't be accounted for, they just might be your man.

Glyn Report 2 Feb 2018 08:39

That looks a possibility. Thanks. I thought maybe he had joined the army as an Edwin Holloway mentioned in Army lists. It’s hard to know if it’s the same person unless they say he came from Wiltshire England. The surname is not uncommon. I’m not sure how I can verify if it’s him. Maybe try to see what happened to him when he landed. Certainly he disappears from family history this side of the Pond

EDWIN HOLLOWAY, 1847-

I’ve had quite good success tracing back the Holloway side of my family. I get to GEORGE HOLLOWAY 1816-1896 who married Elizabeth Sainsbury 1817-1884. They had 3 children, John 1841-1922, Martha 1844-1910 and Edwin b 1847.

I’ve traced Johns family to date, and also traced Martha. However, Edwin disappears without trace as far as I can see.

He’s on the 1861 census living in Sladbrook, Bratton, Westbury with the family. He’s an agricultural Labourer.

I wondered if he joined the army, but can’t find any records of it, or if he died no death record.

So can anyone help to find out what happened to him?
Thanks.
Glyn
