Can anyone decipher the occupation of Richard Osborne in the 1861 census. He was born 1829 in Walsall and he's shown as living with his wife, Jane, in Green Lane. The occupation is something to do with chair making but I can't figure it out.\
Thanks.

My 3x Grt Grandmother's maiden name was Moss.....Spelt "Mofs" on the earlier cencus records.

Thanks everyone. Chair making and furniture refinishing, etc., became the family trade later so it would all make sense.
Thanks also Chris for the bit about Samuel's insolvency. At least one of his children was born in the workhouse so I guess there's a story evolving here.

I think you will find he made horse collars and bridles etc. and maybe seating for coaches. They all seem to be Saddlers of some sort. All the brothers and some neighbours.

I think you're probably right Mel, but then later went into furniture making.
Thanks.

Not sure if I should add to this thread or start a new one, but I'm trying to find Richard Osborn in the 1871 census and not having any luck. I have him in 1861 but drawing a blank in 1871.
Thanks.

Just found a death that could explain why I can't find him - 1867 age 39. I can't even find his wife, Jane, in the 1871 census either, and there was a daughter, Ellen Jane born in 1865.

If, as it appears, John was Richard's brother, then I don't believe that the above marriage was legal at that time.

I think it was not until around 1921 that it became legal for a man to marry his deceased brother's widow?

Not that this stopped anyone from doing it before that date ;-)

Thanks everybody.
Just found a tree for the Tonks family and it appears that the death above is Richard, no wonder I couldn't find him in the 1871 census. Jane apparently married John, Richard's brother, then he died in 1873 and she married again in 1879 to a James Stallwood.
This does explain things but whether it's correct I don't know.
