His wife Mary Ann gets all his
" personal estate goods, chattels and effects whatsoever and wheresoever situate [something] or [something something] at the time of my decease. I also give unto my said wife the freehold house and premises which I now occupy, with the appurtenances thereunto belonging, for her own absolute use and benefit, and my [something] will and desire is that my said wife shall receive the rents as they may become due of my cottage now in the occupation of Mrs Eathor (?) for her own absolute use and the [something] only shall be the proper discharge for and during the full [something] and term of her natural life, and if at the decease of my said wife I give and bequeath the same unto my son John Rowles for his own absolute use and benefit, and from and after my decease I give, devise, and bequeath unto my said son my business and also my yard and [something] situate in the Hair (?) field in the said parish of Kingston for his own use and benefit, but should it please the [something] disposition of all human events that it should be that my son should be without lawful issue before his mother [something] and in such case my will and desire is that the same shall devolve to my said wife [something something] or assigns for [something]. And lastly I do [something] nominate ,constitute and appoint my wife executrix, and my trusty friend Mr [Richard ? or maybe Kincaid ?] paint merchant of this parish of Kingston executor to this my last Will and Testament . . . . . . ."



So his wife gets the house and contents, and also the rent of the cottage, and when she dies it all goes to the son.
Meanwhile, the son gets the business, but if the son doesn't have any lawful heirs before (something to do with the wife), then the business goes to the wife as well.

There is a will on Ancestry for John Rowles born in 1793 and died 12 July 1848. It's very difficult to read. I think it says that he had a cottage rented to a servant and the rents were to go to his wife, Mary Ann, and his business to his son. Can someone who is better at deciphering this style of writing than me please have a look and see if I'm correct.

I agree, it's totally frustrating that we can't find her. I guess there's only so much time we can give her though then we have to give in!

I suppose Susannah Walter isn't really relevant then as she and John Rowles didn't have any children together.

He isn't ... I'm doing this research for a friend in his 80's and John Rowles is his great grandfather.

Great minds ... and all that. I started going through the GRO too but got interrupted ... thanks for finishing that. I wonder if the fact they had no children contributed to the fighting between them leading to the assault.

I wish we could find her after 1861 though but she could be anywhere.

There is no doubt that John Rowles married Susannah Walter.

As she couldn't be found on the 1861 census, i checked the GRO from 1845 to 1855.

I couldn't find any births registered for Rowles with MMN Walter.

So it seems that John and Susannah didn't have any children together.

If that marriage for John Rowles and Susannah Walter in 1845 is the correct one, does it not seem strange that the earliest child we can find is 1853, or am I missing something.

I know what you mean, it's driving me crazy that she's just disappeared.

I've also been trying to find those newspaper articles that Chris mentioned but I can't find them.

Maybe I really need that break next week!!

(just been trying to see, or find when premises were for sale...(Brook Street that is) looking at 1871, counting from start of Brook Street, she seems to be at 15, thought might tell us when she moved...(getting too technical, sorry, lol) Newspapers throw up all manner of things, with addresses (Business, Premises Sales etc.)
