Hoping someone might be able to help with search for an elusive Joseph Hayes (born 1890 in Co. Cork, Ireland). Family moved to Devonport and have found them on 1901 Census some time ago but no Joseph Hayes with family. Have just discovered that a 1911 Census record found at the same time is actually the widowed father and son Joseph whom didn't know existed. Now trying to find out where and with whom he was living in 1901 age about 10 years.

Thank you to anyone who can help.

Can now confirm, thanks to very helpful people, that his correct name is John Joseph Hayes born 1889 in Cork. Change of name, will I hope prove more fruitful on 1901 Census is anyone can help.

There is a family with Jeremiah as head who are in Devonport in 1901, which I suspect you have assumed are yours, but probably aren't, as the age for Jeremiah doesn't tally with 1911

You need to know the mother's name in order to be certain

Could Joseph actually be John Joseph and known by his middle name? There is this birth where the father's name is Jeremiah:-

The only birth on the civil registration for a Joseph Hayes in Cork around that time was the son of Michael Hayes and Mary Hayes, maiden surname Morrison. He was born on 3 July 1890. The informant was Mary Morrison, who made her mark, present at birth.

Thank you ErikaH for all your replies.

The family listed in the 1901 Census you mentioned are all 100% correct and they are the ones I found some years ago. As you will see, there is no mention of the sibling John Joseph Hayes born 1889 whom I have just recently become aware of.

I can also confirm already have the death of the mother you found, Ellen Theresa Hayes in 1906.

Don't know where you got the 1939 information from (Electoral Roll?) but it definitely looks like my John Joseph Hayes.

Still trying to figure out where to find him though on 1901 Census as definitely was not with parents etc.

Thank you to everyone else who is trying to help.

Please excuse my ignorance ErikaH but when I tried your link it took me to the 1901 and 1911 Irish Census page. How do I see the information you gave re a John Hayes age 11 in a school in Cork?

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 21 Mar 2018 18:42

The link is to the home page, from which you search for people

Select 1901, and put in the name and age where it prompts you - and 'Cork' for the County

Have fun!

Dea Report 21 Mar 2018 19:46

The 'school' he was at was Greenmount Industrial School - there is plenty of info available via google - this is just one of many sites:

P.S. - I don't know if they were connected in any way but there were 2 other 'Hayes' boys listed there, they were William aged 13 and Thomas aged 12. These two were listed together much further up the page so they could possibly be brothers??? but John was way down the page away from them so might well not be connected?

Have read a lot about the Greenmount Industrial School but can't find anyway to find any more info re the John Hayes listed in 1901. Does anyone have any advice on where I could research to confirm parentage of this John Hayes?

Would be great to find him instead on the 1901 English Census!

Thanks everyone again.
