Find Ancestors

Can anyone help me find William Okey in the 1881 census.

In 1841 with parents Richard and Elizabeth in Stroud.
In 1851 he's married with wife Mary A. and son William, in Stroud
In 1861 he's with wife and children William Henry, Emily, Henry Joseph and John.
In 1871 name changes to Oakey and he is with wife and children Emily S., John B., Albert R., Lavinia R., Margaret E. and Clara L.
In 1891 there is just his widow Mary Ann living in Birmingham.

I can't find any of the family in 1881.

Austin you are a genius! I have spent days trying to find this. I tried all the variations of Oakey that I could think of, and thought it was really weird that I couldn't find any of the family. There had to be an answer and you found it.

Why do you suspect that Clara is a granddaughter?

I've been looking further into this and it seems that the family moved to London in 1881 for some reason, but William's wife, Mary, is shown in 1891 census as living back in Birmingham as a widow. I've been trying to find William's death but the only one I can find is in the fourth quarter of 1891 and I think the census was usually taken in the early part of the year.

Any suggestions?

On the GRO, there is no mother's maiden name listed for Clara- this usually indicates the child was born to a single unmarried mother. To be certain you would need to see the birth certificate,

Chris- Nice find on that baptism for Clara Lodge Okey- seems to confirm that she was the daughter of Emily (but brought up as Emily's sister).

Definitely looks as though Clara Lodge is the one - she's even shown as Clara L. in the 1871 census. Nice work detectives!

I'm finding this family a bit mysterious. They all live in Gloucestershire area up to 1871 then they move to London where they stay until after 1881 then move back to Birmingham. Throw in an illegitimate child and ???

On 1911 census Mary Ann is shown living in an alms house in Birmingham. On the census it says she has had 16 children, 6 living. From the entries on this thread and what I've found myself, I can't come close to 16 children, even including the illegitimate Clara. Any thoughts?

Just for information, I sent for the birth certificate for Clara Lodge and mother's name was given as Emily Sophia Okey, with no father's name. I guess that confirms things.
